Core Function of the Role
This is not a traditional BI developer role focused on long-term dashboard building for a single project. Instead, it's an internal consulting position. The team supports enterprise-wide BI tool usage, working cross-functionally with various business and technical users to:
β’ Provide support, training, and troubleshooting for BI tools.
β’ Evaluate new features/tools.
β’ Create and publish internal documentation (job aids, blogs, evaluations).
β’ Build prototypes and assist with BI best practices.
Key Technical Expectations
β’ Tools Expertise: Candidates must have expert-level experience with Tableau and some exposure to AWS QuickSight (even if not deep). At least one other BI tool (e.g., Power BI, MicroStrategy, or Alteryx) is required.
β’ SQL Skills: Must be proficient in SQL for data querying, joins, and underlying logic. Doesnβt need to be advanced but should be comfortable speaking to SQL logic.
β’ Learning Mindset: Strong ability to evaluate and test new BI tools/features and document findings clearly.
Critical Soft Skills
These are just as important as technical skills, if not more so:
β’ Strong written communication for creating internal content like job aids, blogs, evaluation reports, and documentation.
β’ Strong verbal communication to interface with internal customers, many of whom are business users or "citizen developers", not technical developers.
β’ Ability to give presentations and contribute to internal knowledge-sharing sessions.
Typical Work Breakdown
Workload is dynamic and may shift based on business needs, but the general split is:
β’ ~30%: Direct customer support (increasing as the consultant gains experience).
β’ ~30%: Research & evaluation (testing new tools/features, evaluating new products).
β’ ~30%: Authoring internal documentation (job aids, blogs, presentations, etc.).
The mix can fluctuate depending on demand (e.g., during tool rollouts or high user support needs).
Ideal Candidate Profile
β’ BI Generalist/Consultant mindset, not someone looking to be a dashboard developer on a single project.
β’ Strong in Tableau (ideally Server, but Cloud is okay), with QuickSight exposure and willingness to learn more.
β’ Able to write well and communicate clearly with non-technical stakeholders.
β’ Has a teaching, mentoring, or enablement mindset (even if informally).
β’ Comfortable with dynamic workloads, shifting between support, research, and documentation.
Not a Fit Ifβ¦
β’ They want to work 100% remote.
β’ Theyβre strictly heads-down dashboard developers.
β’ They lack both Tableau and QuickSight experience.
β’ They are unable or unwilling to write and present.
β’ They cannot speak to their SQL experience confidently.
