Role description
Job Title: BI Developer
Category: Data Fabric & Lakehouse
Type: Contract to hire (Full-time)
Hourly rate range: $55/h - Β£70/h
Salary: $110,000 - $140,000
General Purpose of the Job
The organization is transforming how its administration and faculty understand and use data. They are building a cloud-native Microsoft Fabric Lakehouse on a Medallion Architecture (Bronze/Silver/Gold), and they need someone who can translate that investment into insight that changes decisions
They are looking for a BI Developer who acts as a strategic partner to our academic and administrative leaders, someone who sits with a budget director or a program chair, understands their real problem, and builds a Power BI solution that changes how they lead
Your job is to design the pipes, faucets, and fixtures that deliver the right data, in the right form, to every office and program on campus
You will work directly with stakeholders to gather requirements, prototype and iterate rapidly, and proactively recommend alternatives that better accomplish the business objectives, drawing from both their Lakehouse Gold layer and their legacy data sources during the migration transition.
Duties and Responsibilities
β’ Partner with Stakeholders: Act as the primary interface between IT and business units. Facilitate requirements sessions, translate ambiguous questions into data models, and iterate rapidly with prototype-first development cycles
β’ Design and Deliver Solutions: Design, build, and publish production-grade reports and dashboards. Own the full lifecycle from canvas design to deployment, ensuring both aesthetic quality and actionable insights
β’ Build and Govern Semantic Models: Author and maintain semantic models. Implement DAX measures based on approved business glossary definitions to ensure a "Single Source of Truth." Configure role-based access control (RBAC) and row-level security (RLS) to ensure appropriate data visibility
β’ Recommend Smarter Alternatives: Evaluate whether requested report formats serve the business objective. Recommend paginated reports, embedded visuals, or spreadsheet-connected models when appropriate
β’ Technical Execution: Write precise SQL and DAX queries to prepare data for visualization. Document all calculations for stakeholder review and contribute to technical metadata in the data catalog.
β’ Data Governance: Participate in the organizational Data Governance Program to ensure all outputs adhere to approved definitions, access policies, and data classification standards
Requirements
β’ Education: Bachelorβs degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Statistics, or a related quantitative field; or 3β5 years of equivalent experience
β’ Experience: 3+ years in BI development, data analytics, or a related field.
Core Competencies
β’ Expertise in enterprise-grade BI visualization tools (building, publishing, and governing).
β’ Proficiency in DAX for calculated measures, KPIs, and time-intelligence.
β’ Working proficiency in SQL (T-SQL or Spark SQL) for data preparation and analysis.
β’ Experience building and governing semantic models, including RLS.
β’ Experience with stakeholder requirements gathering and iterative, prototype-driven delivery.
β’ Experience in higher education, healthcare, or similar mission-driven organizations. Experience with modern Lakehouse platforms (e.g., Fabric, Databricks, Synapse, Snowflake).
Technical Skills
β’ Visualization: Advanced proficiency in modern BI suites and paginated report design
β’ Query Languages: Expert-level DAX; proficient T-SQL / Spark SQL
β’ Platforms: Experience with cloud-native Lakehouse environments, data factories, and pipelines.
β’ Collaboration: Familiarity with Git-backed version control, team collaboration tools, and documentation platforms.
