Role description
Data Engineer - Contract - Outside IR35 - Wembley Hybrid This position will focus on improving and maturing the existing data platform, developing scalable data structures and pipelines, and supporting the wider business in maximising the value of its data. The environment has been established within Microsoft Fabric for several years, however there remains significant opportunity to improve data warehousing structures, data modelling, governance and reporting capabilities. The successful candidate will work across the full data lifecycle, from ingestion and transformation through to reporting and security, while collaborating closely with Data Analysts and business stakeholders. This is a hands-on role suited to someone who enjoys building practical, maintainable solutions and can balance strong technical capability with a business-focused approach. Key Responsibilities • Design, develop and maintain data pipelines within Microsoft Fabric. • Build and enhance scalable data warehouse solutions and dimensional data models. • Develop and maintain Star and Snowflake schema designs to support reporting and analytics. • Manage data ingestion, transformation and modelling processes across multiple data sources. • Work with Microsoft Fabric Pipelines, Warehouses, Lakehouses and associated services. • Develop and support Python-based data engineering solutions where appropriate. • Maintain and improve existing SSIS-based ETL and transformation processes. • Design and optimise SQL and T-SQL solutions for data extraction, transformation and reporting. • Support the development and optimisation of Power BI datasets, semantic models and reporting solutions. • Implement and maintain Row-Level Security and reporting security models within PowerBI. • Work closely with Data Analysts to validate reporting outputs and ensure data accuracy. • Contribute to testing, governance, documentation and data quality initiatives. • Support the ongoing development of customer-facing reporting and portal solutions. • Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, simplify processes and increase platform scalability. • Provide guidance and knowledge sharing to colleagues, helping to develop internal Microsoft Fabric capability. • Collaborate with operational, commercial and technical stakeholders to translate business requirements into effective data solutions. Essential Skills & Experience • Proven experience working as a Data Engineer, Senior Data Engineer, BI Developer, Analytics Engineer or Data Warehouse Developer. • Strong hands-on experience with Microsoft Fabric. • Strong SQL and T-SQL development skills. • Experience designing and developing ETL/ELT pipelines. • Strong understanding of data warehousing principles and best practices. • Experience designing and implementing Star Schema and Snowflake Schema models. • Experience working with data ingestion, transformation and pipeline development. • Strong Python skills for data engineering and automation tasks. • Experience supporting and developing Power BI reporting environments. • Knowledge of Power BI security models, including Row-Level Security. • Experience working with SSIS and on-premise data integration solutions. • Understanding of data governance, testing and data quality processes. • Ability to work across both engineering and reporting functions. • Strong communication skills with the ability to engage technical and non-technical stakeholders. • Experience mentoring, supporting or upskilling colleagues within a data environment. • A pragmatic approach to solution design, with a focus on maintainability, scalability and business value.
