Role description
Senior AWS Data Engineer Location: Remote (US) | Type: Full Time | Experience: 8+ years About the Role We're hiring a Senior AWS Data Engineer to lead the next phase of the data platform for a major federal healthcare modernization program. The work is central to the team's evolution from an MSSQL XML object store into a scalable, cloud-native AWS data architecture that lets analysts and business stakeholders run real SQL reports against healthcare data. This is an architecture seat. You'll evaluate the right AWS data strategy (S3 with Athena, Aurora, DynamoDB, Redshift, or OpenSearch), make the call, and lead the migration. You'll design the query and reporting layer that non-technical users actually use, partner with backend engineers on the integration points, and document the decisions so the team can build on them. If you want to drive an ambiguous architecture call to resolution and own it end to end, this is the kind of role that rewards that. What You'll Do • Evaluate AWS-native data storage and query architectures against query patterns, reporting needs, cost, and scalability • Architect the migration path from an MSSQL XML object store into the target AWS platform, including storage formats, partitioning, and data organization • Design and build the reporting and query layer that lets stakeholders run relational SQL queries against healthcare data • Build and maintain AWS data catalogs, schemas, and metadata so data is discoverable and queryable • Optimize query performance and cost across chosen AWS services through partitioning, compression, and file format choices • Partner with backend C#/.NET engineers to make sure data flows cleanly from EDI processing pipelines into the new data layer • Maintain CI/CD for data infrastructure using AWS-native tooling • Document architecture decisions, data flows, and data dictionaries for technical and non-technical audiences Qualifications Core Technical • 8+ years of software or data engineering experience with a strong AWS focus • Bachelor's or Master's in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical discipline (equivalent practical experience considered) • Deep AWS data services: S3, Athena, Glue, Aurora, DynamoDB, Redshift, OpenSearch, Lambda, IAM, CloudWatch • Strong SQL skills, including designing relational query layers over semi-structured or non-relational data • Experience parsing, querying, and transforming XML-heavy data stores at scale • Familiarity with Athena, QuickSight, Redshift, or equivalent BI tooling Architecture and Delivery • Proven experience leading cloud data platform migrations in enterprise or healthcare environments • Track record of evaluating AWS data services and recommending architecture based on cost, performance, and business need • Experience delivering reporting or analytics for non-technical business users • IaC with AWS CDK, CloudFormation, or Terraform • CI/CD with AWS CodePipeline, CodeBuild, CodeDeploy • Git/GitHub collaborative workflows Communication and Process • Strong ability to communicate architecture decisions and trade-offs to non-technical stakeholders • Comfortable resolving ambiguous architecture decisions with limited direction • Agile delivery and JIRA, with strong documentation habits Nice to Have • Experience with X12 EDI (837, 835, 277CA), HL7, or FHIR • Familiarity with C#/.NET backend services for integration touchpoints • Entity Framework migration or deprecation experience • HIPAA compliance in cloud data architecture • Healthcare payer/PBM, clearinghouses, or pharmacy operations background • AWS certification Clearance • US Citizenship required, with the ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance Why Join Us This is the architecture role on the platform. You'll set the direction for how healthcare data gets stored, queried, and reported on for years to come. The engineering team is small enough that decisions actually land, and the customer is a federal healthcare mission that gives the work real weight. Remote, senior, and built for someone who likes to drive ambiguous calls to resolution. To apply, click Apply on LinkedIn and visit eliosai.com/browse-jobs
