The Frontier Tech Hub is a flagship initiative within the FCDO that explores how emerging technologies — including artificial intelligence, blockchain, remote sensing, and digital identity — can be responsibly applied to solve complex global development challenges. Operating at the intersection of innovation and impact, the Frontier Tech Hub provides technical expertise, experimentation spaces, and strategic guidance to help FCDO teams harness cutting-edge tools in real-world contexts. By fostering a culture of curiosity, collaboration, and ethical innovation, the Frontier Tech Hub ensures the UK remains at the forefront of tech-enabled development and diplomacy.

The Frontier Tech Hub’s work is structured around three core pillars:
Scoping Frontier Technologies through Futures Immersions and Horizon Scanning
Testing and Developing Frontier Technologies through funding pilots to evaluate critical assumptions and supporting High Impact Strategic Investments
Adopting Frontier Technologies through conducting AI Opportunity Scans and running an AI Sandbox which enables hands-on experimentation and practical demonstrations of what AI can do.
Main Responsibilities / Job Content
Act as the Lead Coach on AI related pilots selected through our most recent call for applications from FCDO staff.
Provide strategic advice on AI adoption, identifying emerging AI trends and opportunities relevant to international development, and helping to shape organizational approaches to AI integration and capacity building.
Design and deliver workshops with FCDO staff, delivery partners and tech partners to identify opportunities for AI integration in policy and programme work and produce synthesis reports which provide actionable recommendations.
Identify and manage AI partners and vendors to support programme delivery including preparing terms of references, assessing technical capabilities, developing and costing scopes of work and overseeing partnerships to deliver AI solutions responsibly and effectively.
Facilitate hands-on learning experiences such as promptathons, demos and simulations
Evaluate ethical and safeguarding considerations by identifying potential risks related to AI use, including issues of ethics, inclusion, and safeguarding, and providing guidance to ensure responsible AI implementation.
Provide support to other elements of the project as required
Provide thought leadership, publicly sharing learning from the programme, and contributing to Evidence and Storytelling.
Essential Skills & Experience
AI expertise and practical application in international development: Demonstrated experience implementing AI solutions in development contexts, with strong knowledge of AI tools, technologies, and use cases relevant to international development programming, policy development, and monitoring, evaluation and learning (MEL).
Coaching and facilitation skills: Proven ability to coach teams through innovative processes, design and deliver engaging workshops, and facilitate hands-on learning experiences such as training sessions, demonstrations, and simulations for diverse audiences including development practitioners and partner organizations.
Agile prototyping and innovation methodologies: Experience with agile prototyping, innovation labs, or experimental tech environments, including rapid testing and iteration of AI solutions, user-centered design approaches, and translating proof-of-concepts into scalable implementations.
Partnership and vendor management: Experience identifying, assessing, and managing technical partners or vendors in international development settings, including developing scopes of work, cost estimation, and overseeing delivery and quality assurance of technology outputs.
Analytical and synthesis capabilities: Strong ability to assess complex organizational processes and development programmes, synthesize findings from multiple stakeholders, and produce clear, actionable recommendations in written reports appropriate for technical and non-technical staff.
Understanding of responsible AI principles in development: Knowledge of ethical considerations in AI deployment within international development, including experience identifying and mitigating risks related to ethics, inclusion, safeguarding, data protection, and responsible technology use in low-resource or vulnerable settings
Stakeholder engagement across development ecosystems: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with experience working collaboratively across different teams, including technical and non-technical staff, local delivery partners, international organizations, and civil society in diverse cultural contexts
Project management: Ability to manage multiple projects and activities simultaneously, meeting deadlines and delivering high-quality outputs in a fast-paced environment while navigating the complexities of international development programming.
