Job Description
General Role Purpose
Business Analyst for the Environmental Data Domain at Cobre Panamá, acting as the functional Product Owner. This role serves as the functional owner of environmental data products and as the key liaison between the Environmental Management team and its five Superintendent areas (Reforestation, Protected Areas, Environmental Operations, Compliance and Reporting, and AI/Environmental Studies & Closure), as well as corporate ICT teams (Data & Analytics, Cybersecurity) and the Group AI Portfolio.
The core value of the role is to interpret the nature of environmental data (biodiversity, physicochemical, forestry, geospatial, and operational) and define how it should be captured, governed, integrated, and visualized to generate business intelligence. The role translates business needs into actionable requirements, prioritizes the backlog, validates deliverables, and accepts releases, working closely with subject matter experts for scientific interpretation and with ICT for technical implementation.
Key Accountabilities
Environmental Data Governance and Product Ownership
Maintain and prioritize the backlog of environmental data products, including databases, dashboards, integrations, automation, and reporting.
Define, together with the five Superintendencies, the environmental data roadmap and arbitrate priorities when resource constraints arise.
Establish the definition of done for deliverables and formally accept releases once functional validation is completed.
Ensure data quality, integrity, and traceability throughout the full lifecycle of environmental data.
Collaboration Model with ICT and Technical Areas
Work closely with ICT (Data & Analytics, Architecture, Cybersecurity), the Group AI Portfolio, and OT in the following areas:
Define functional requirements and perform QA validation for databases, data lakes, ETL processes, and integrations in collaboration with Data & Analytics.
Define data classification and access control needs with Cybersecurity, ensuring alignment with corporate policies and Panama’s Data Protection Law (Law 81).
Specify environmental domain data architecture requirements in collaboration with ICT Architecture.
Coordinate AI/ML initiatives within the environmental domain in alignment with the Group AI Portfolio framework.
Define functional requirements and validate field data acquisition platforms, sensors, and network integrations with OT/ICT.
Qualifications, Knowledge & Experience
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Data Science, Statistics, Systems Engineering, Geography/GIS, or a related field.
Preferred: Master’s degree in Business Analytics, Data Science, Environmental Management, GIS, or Artificial Intelligence.
Desirable certifications include Scrum Product Owner (PSPO), PMP, Power BI Data Analyst Associate, and ArcGIS.
Experience
Minimum of eight (8) years of combined experience in data product management, data analytics, and/or business intelligence, with at least three (3) years in functional ownership roles such as Product Owner, Senior Business Analyst, or equivalent.
Proven experience defining functional requirements for ICT and data teams and accepting deliverables under agile methodologies.
Experience in environmental, mining, or natural resource contexts subject to external audits (EsIA, ISO 14001, TSM, Copper Mark, or equivalent).
Experience designing and implementing executive dashboards and KPI systems.
Experience coordinating multidisciplinary teams and managing external consultants.
Technical Knowledge (Must-Have)
Expert-level proficiency in Business Intelligence tools such as Power BI or Tableau.
Working knowledge of GIS platforms such as ArcGIS or QGIS for spatial data specification and validation.
Functional SQL knowledge for data querying and validation, and conceptual understanding of relational databases, NoSQL systems, data lakes, and ETL processes.
Experience with agile methodologies (Scrum/Kanban), including backlog management, definition of done, and release acceptance.
Strong capability in data QA/QC processes, including statistical validation and reconciliation of environmental datasets.
Technical Knowledge (Nice-to-Have)
Knowledge of Python or R for exploratory data analysis.
Experience with AI/ML applications in environmental contexts such as image processing, OCR, or predictive modeling.
Familiarity with biodiversity and ecological restoration metrics.
Exposure to IoT sensors, data historians, and real-time monitoring platforms.
Knowledge of Panama’s personal data protection regulations (Law 81).

Identify opportunities for predictive analytics and escalate AI-related initiatives.
Prepare executive reports tailored to different stakeholder audiences.
Conduct gap analysis on regulatory commitments and compliance evidence.
Dashboards, KPIs, and Performance Monitoring
Design and maintain dashboards using Power BI or Tableau.
Coordinate with ICT for data publication and with Communications for dissemination.
Implement alerts and early-warning systems for critical environmental parameters.
Maintain executive dashboards for EsIA and BAP tracking, including targets, progress, and compliance status.
Agile Product Management and Cross-Functional Coordination
Apply agile methodologies to manage the environmental data product portfolio.
Coordinate external consultants and technical vendors.
Facilitate communication between environmental teams, ICT, and AI portfolio stakeholders.
Manage and prioritize continuous improvement initiatives.
Interface with Group AI Portfolio
Register all AI/ML initiatives within the Group AI Portfolio prior to execution.
Apply governance frameworks for risk classification and model approval.
Coordinate with AI Portfolio leadership on validation, deployment, and traceability of models.
Ensure compliance with data privacy regulations and corporate policies.
Prevent unauthorized AI initiatives from being executed outside governance processes.
Regulatory Reporting and Compliance Support
Support the preparation of regulatory reports through data automation and system integration.
