Role description
Job Description: We are seeking an experienced Apigee API Platform Development Engineer to lead the design, security, and management of our APIs and API gateway platform. In this role, you will leverage deep expertise in Apigee API traffic management, REST API security patterns (Basic Auth, OAuth 2.0, mTLS), and CDN integration (Akamai) to ensure our APIs are scalable, secure, and high-performing. You will also play a key role in Apigee architecture oversight and spearhead our transition from Apigee Edge to Apigee Hybrid deployment. The ideal candidate is a Senior API Platform Engineer with 8+ years of experience (including substantial Apigee Edge/Hybrid experience) in building enterprise-grade API management solutions, designing robust API proxies and flows, and implementing advanced security and traffic-control policies. Required Skills & Qualifications β€’ Experience: 8+ years of software engineering experience with at least 5 years focused on API management and Google Apigee platform (Apigee Edge and/or Apigee Hybrid). Proven track record of designing, developing, and optimizing large-scale API solutions using Apigee in enterprise environments. β€’ Apigee Expertise: Hands-on mastery of Apigee Edge and Apigee Hybrid. Deep understanding of Apigee’s core architecture and components – e.g. Edge Management Server, Router, Message Processor, Analytics services, Developer Portal, Cassandra data store, ZooKeeper coordination, etc. Ability to configure and troubleshoot the full Apigee stack, from API proxy design, shared flow development and tracing, to underlying platform services. β€’ API Security & Networking: Strong knowledge of REST API security standards and protocols. Must be well-versed in OAuth 2.0 (client credentials, authorization code flows), JSON Web Tokens (JWT), API key management, TLS/mTLS encryption, and implementing authentication/authorization policies in Apigee. Experience integrating API gateways with enterprise identity providers (e.g., PingFederate, Okta) for SSO and federated OAuth/JWT validation is highly desirable. Familiarity with network and security concepts such as firewalls, DNS, load balancers, and WAF/CDN (e.g., Akamai) as they relate to API routing and threat protection. β€’ Akamai & Edge Services: Demonstrated experience working with Akamai CDN or similar edge delivery networks in conjunction with an API gateway. β€’ Cloud & DevOps Skills: Familiarity with Kubernetes and cloud infrastructure (GCP, AWS, or Azure) is required, especially for working with Apigee Hybrid deployments. β€’ API & Web Services Development: Solid grasp of RESTful API design principles and best practices in building scalable web services. Proficiency in at least one programming or scripting language (JavaScript, Java, Python, etc.) for writing custom Apigee policies (JavaScript/Node.js, Java callouts) or automating tasks. Familiarity with microservices architecture and frameworks (e.g., Java Spring Boot or Node.js for backend services) is a plus, as Apigee often integrates with microservice backends. β€’ Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field is required. A Master’s degree in a relevant field is a plus.
