Role description
6 month contract - £500-600/day INSIDE IR35 - Largely Remote
We are partnering with a global enterprise IT and cloud solutions provider to bring on an Azure Data Engineer on an urgent contract.
You will play a hands-on role in designing, building, and optimizing scalable, enterprise-grade data pipelines within a modern cloud data lakehouse environment. Working closely with Principal Architects, BI Analysts, and Data Scientists, you will take ownership of ingesting raw data from varied sources (REST APIs, on-prem databases, streaming feeds) and transforming it into clean, high-performance Kimball dimensional models using a Medallion Architecture.
Key Responsibilities
• Pipeline Engineering: Build and optimize batch and real-time ingestion/transformation pipelines using Azure Data Factory (ADF) and Azure Databricks.
• Data Lakehouse Architecture: Implement and maintain a structured Medallion Architecture (Bronze/Silver/Gold layers) on Delta Lake.
• Dimensional Modeling: Design robust Kimball star schemas (Facts & Dimensions) to serve clean, aggregated data for downstream Power BI reporting and machine learning.
• Automated QA & Data Quality: Build automated testing frameworks (e.g., unit/integration testing) and validation rules to ensure data integrity before reaching production.
• Software Engineering Discipline: Write clean, modular PySpark/Python code adhering to SOLID principles, CI/CD pipelines (Azure DevOps/Git), and Infrastructure-as-Code practices (Terraform/Bicep).
What We’re Looking For
Essential Experience:
• 3+ years of hands-on Data Engineering experience in commercial environments.
• Deep proficiency in PySpark, Python, and SQL.
• Strong production experience with Azure Databricks, Azure Data Factory (ADF), and Azure Data Lake Storage (ADLS Gen2).
• Proven track record implementing Medallion Architecture (Star/Snowflake schemas, SCD Type 1/2).
• Solid understanding of modern engineering practices: CI/CD, version control (Git), automated testing/QA, and data validation.
Desirable / Nice-to-Have:
• Experience with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, Bicep, or ARM).
• Exposure to Microsoft Fabric, Unity Catalog, or Microsoft Purview.
• Familiarity with C# or streaming tech (Spark Structured Streaming / Kafka).
• Active Microsoft or Databricks certifications (e.g., DP-203, Databricks Certified Data Engineer).
