Role description
We are looking to add a Building Energy CapX Engineer who will bridge the gap between complex energy concepts and practical software solutions. About Us Joulea is a startup building a software platform that reduces energy consumption in commercial buildings. Buildings consume 40% of the total energy in the United States and emit over 10% more greenhouse gas emissions than the entire transportation sector combined - vehicles, trucks, aircraft, rail and ships. A significant portion of commercial building budgets are spent and wasted on energy usage. We use the aerospace industry’s product lifecycle management principles in order to create a novel approach to apply them to commercial real estate. Joulea implements holistic, integrated optimization methods that redefine energy efficiency and reduce operating costs within commercial buildings. We are an ATDC portfolio company backed by wemarathon with offices at ATDC in Midtown Atlanta. Building Energy CapX Engineer We are hiring a Building Energy CapX Engineer who can bridge building science and data science. This role focuses on using code and analytics to extract insights from building performance data and translate them into actionable energy and operational improvements. Responsibilities include developing simulation and data pipelines, performing energy modeling and calibration, analyzing BAS and utility data, and supporting fault detection and diagnostics. The ideal candidate understands HVAC systems, energy use patterns, and statistical or machine-learning methods used in building analytics, with strong proficiency in Python or similar programming languages. Key Responsibilities • Identify and evaluate capital energy efficiency upgrades across single buildings and multi-building portfolios. • Develop calibrated energy models to quantify baseline performance and forecast savings from retrofit and modernization projects. • Analyze BAS and utility time-series data to detect systemic inefficiencies that warrant capital intervention. • Perform lifecycle cost analysis and financial modeling to assess project viability using metrics such as ROI, NPV, IRR, and payback period. • Optimize capital scopes within budget constraints, balancing performance impact, risk, and return across competing projects. • Support portfolio-wide capital planning by benchmarking building performance and prioritizing upgrades based on energy intensity, operational risk, and asset strategy. • Collaborate with engineering, finance, and software team to translate technical findings into investment-grade capital proposals. Requirements • Strong foundation in building energy systems, HVAC operation, and thermodynamics, with the ability to interpret real-world building performance and operational behavior • Experience with building energy modeling platforms such as EnergyPlus, OpenStudio or similar tools. • Proficiency in Python (or comparable programming languages) for data analysis, automation, simulation integration, and portfolio analytics. • Familiarity with ASHRAE building standards • Experience developing capital cost estimates using cost databases, benchmarking tools, or market pricing, and evaluating upgrade scenarios under varying financial and operational constraints. • Ability to assess risk, uncertainty, and sensitivity in projected energy savings and financial outcomes.
