Role description
About the Role
HMRC is building a new AI-ready metadata knowledge platform that will help us make smarter decisions, reuse valuable insights, and improve how we manage risk and transform our services. This platform will connect policy, data, and operational knowledge—making it easier to understand how things work, why decisions were made, and where opportunities or risks lie. You’ll work with individual Directorates, regimes and strategic enterprise functions across HMRC to gather and document what they need from the platform and use your expertise to help us design it in a way that supports future decision-making and transformation of our services.
What You’ll Do
• Engage with stakeholders across HMRC—from policy and operations to architecture and analytics—to understand and document their information needs.
• Use your data science and AI knowledge to advise on how the platform can surface insights, link related information, and support smarter decisions.
• Help build relationships between different types of information in our metadata tools (like Informatica AXON).
• Support the creation of a semantic layer that connects data, business rules, policy logic, and transformation knowledge.
• Contribute to a reusable enterprise asset that preserves insights from transformation programmes and enables future reuse.
Why This Matters
This platform builds on existing metadata tools like AXON, ABACUS, and EDC to enrich and integrate metadata, link key assets, and create a semantic layer. It is expected to use the latest AI and metadata technologies to enable smarter search, discovery, and question-answering—grounded in trusted internal knowledge.
It complements HMRC’s data warehouse integration programme by adding the “intelligence layer” that explains what our data means, how it’s used, and why it matters. Starting with high-value domains like address data, it will expand to others over time—preserving insights from transformation programmes and enabling better compliance, forecasting, and strategic agility.
What We’re Looking For
• Experience in business analysis, especially in data-rich or complex environments.
• Background in data science, AI, or advanced analytics.
• Strong communication skills and ability to work with a wide range of stakeholders.
• Ability to translate technical ideas into practical business value.
Nice to Have
• Experience with metadata tools like Informatica AXON.
• Understanding of semantic layer design and AI-readiness.
• Familiarity with government or regulated environments.
