Role description
Job Title: Business Intelligence Contractor
Location: Hybrid (Onsite + Remote) – Irvine, CA Duration: 6 Months Job Description
We are seeking an experienced Business Intelligence Contractor to lead the development of advanced analytics solutions that support student success initiatives. This role will focus on building high-impact Power BI dashboards, optimizing data models, and ensuring secure, compliant handling of sensitive information. The ideal candidate is an expert in Power BI, SQL development, and BI best practices, with the ability to work closely with business analysts and stakeholders to translate complex requirements into actionable insights.
Key Responsibilities
Design, develop, and deploy advanced Power BI dashboards, reports, and semantic models.
Establish and document best practices, standards, and development guidelines for BI reporting.
Mentor and provide technical guidance to new Power BI developers.
Collaborate with business systems analysts and stakeholders to gather and translate complex business needs into technical specifications.
Develop and optimize complex SQL queries, reporting views, stored procedures, and functions in SQL Server.
Implement robust data security measures including row-level and object-level security.
Ensure compliance with data privacy regulations and institutional policies.
Perform data modeling, performance optimization, and scalability enhancements.
Create comprehensive documentation for reports, datasets, and development processes.
Required Skills & Experience
Power BI Expertise
Power BI Desktop, Power BI Service, and Power BI Report Server
Advanced DAX for complex calculations
Power Query (M language)
Semantic dataset design and optimization
Row-level and object-level security
Advanced SQL Experience
Complex query development and optimization
Stored procedures, views, and functions
Performance tuning
SQL Server experience preferred
Data Security & Privacy
Experience handling sensitive/confidential data
Knowledge of data governance and compliance requirements
Business Analysis & Collaboration
Ability to gather and translate complex business requirements
Experience working with cross-functional stakeholders
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
Excellent communication skills
Professional Background
Minimum 5+ years of BI and analytics development experience
Portfolio/examples of Power BI dashboards demonstrating advanced capability
Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in higher education analytics and student success metrics
Knowledge of FERPA or similar privacy regulations
Familiarity with AWS data lake ecosystem (S3, Glue, Athena, Iceberg, Redshift)
Experience with data transformation tools such as dbt, Informatica, etc.
Understanding of data warehousing and dimensional modeling (star/snowflake schema)
Knowledge of Python or R for advanced analytics
Experience with version control (Git)
Exposure to Agile/Scrum methodologies
Power BI certification (e.g., Microsoft Certified: Data Analyst Associate)
Experience with other BI tools (Tableau, Qlik)
Background in student information systems (SIS) or educational databases
