Role description

We are seeking a Cheminformatics Data Scientist Contractor to join our client’s Research Informatics team. This role will be key in supporting and scaling cheminformatics and data management workflows across our discovery platforms. We’re looking for someone who is not only detail-oriented and execution-focused, but who also brings creativity and curiosity to push the boundaries of what’s possible in drug discovery informatics. The successful candidate will be responsible for deploying and supporting informatics software and workflows. Additionally, the individual will assist in optimizing, integrating, automating, and maintaining the data backbone of the Drug Discovery Department.

This position is a 6-month contract to start, and will be on-site full time in Durham, NC.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

   • Develop, maintain, and scale informatics workflows for compound registration and progression across disparate projects.

   • Support and maintain digital inventory management.

   • Use cloud-based software to guide the capture and automation of data workflows.

   • Collaborate with Drug Discovery scientists to deploy and support automated data pipelines and tools in production environments.

   • Curate and ensure data integrity, completeness, and consistency across multiple systems.

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

   • Identify opportunities to innovate in biochemical data processing, visualization, and automation.

   • Support the training and configuration of end users on informatics systems.

Education:

   • B.S. or M.S. in a scientific or computational discipline

Experience:

   • B.S. plus 5 years of experience or M.S., plus 3 or more years of experience in biotech/pharma/technology, with a track record of supporting software solutions in a multi-disciplinary R&D setting.

   • Wet-lab experience required.

Skills:

Technical:

   • Experience in cloud-based applications strongly preferred: RESTful API, Apache Tomcat, Revvity Signals, IDBS xlFit, Hamilton Venus & Instinct, SQL Scripting, JSON & XML data formats.

   • Experience in laboratory settings and an understanding of early R&D Drug-Discovery workflows such as compound registration, compound progression, and automated compound testing are required.

   • Familiarity and ability to code in an object-oriented language such as Python, VBA, JavaScript etc.

   • Understanding of molecular representation techniques (SMILES, InChI, CDXML).

   • Ability to understand, visualize, implement, and maintain digital solutions in a research environment.

   • Collaborate with scientists to support templates and informatics system configurations that harmonize with scientific workflows and facilitate structured data capture.

Preferred Qualifications:

   • Instrument integration experience using RESTful API.

   • Knowledge of data architecture, data lakes, and FAIR/ALCOA+ data principles.

   • Track record of building software solutions to automate complex processes.

   • Understanding of chemical and biological data types used in R&D environments.

   • Familiarity of digital-twins and scientific automation.

   • Experience with Microsoft Excel VBA, SQL, and web-application development.

Communication:

   • Excellent written and oral communication skills; ability to communicate technical and cross-functional data to diverse audiences in a fast-paced, innovative drug discovery environment.
