Role description
Title: Senior Natural / ADABAS Developer (Mississippi Residents Only)
Location: Jackson, Mississippi 39211 - locals only - relocation not allowed
Duration: Multi-year contract (through 02/01/2029 with strong extension likelihood)
This is a long-term, stable government contract supporting legacy system enhancements, maintenance, and development for MAVS and related eligibility platforms.
Mississippi residency is REQUIRED. No exceptions.
About the Role
In this position, you will work on complex legacy applications built in Natural, ADABAS, COBOL, JCL, and IBM mainframe technologies. You’ll perform development, enhancements, maintenance, troubleshooting, testing, and debugging for SNAP/TANF eligibility systems that directly impact Mississippi families.
This is ideal for a highly experienced Natural/ADABAS engineer who wants stability, predictable work, and the opportunity to support an essential state mission.
Key Responsibilities
• Develop and maintain mission-critical applications using Natural, ADABAS, COBOL, JCL, Jobtrac, and IBM mainframe tools
• Analyze system requirements and enhance existing SNAP/TANF eligibility modules
• Debug and resolve production issues in multi-tier environments
• Participate in design reviews, code reviews, and system testing
• Create documentation, test cases, and ensure compliance with state IT standards
• Collaborate with state IT teams and business analysts for requirement refinement
• Perform on-call support (paid rotation)
Required Experience
• 10+ years of hands-on development using Natural & ADABAS
• Experience supporting public-sector eligibility systems (SNAP, TANF, Medicaid, etc.) strongly preferred
• Strong background in COBOL, JCL, TSO/ISPF, and mainframe utilities
• Ability to troubleshoot, optimize performance, and maintain legacy applications
• Strong understanding of structured programming and batch processing
• Excellent communication and documentation skills
Preferred Experience
• Experience working with MDHS, MDES, Medicaid, or other state agencies
• Familiarity with SNAP/TANF eligibility rules
• Experience with Jobtrac scheduling
• Prior experience modernizing or rewriting legacy systems
