Role description
Interim Controller (Contract/Temporary Assignment) Are you an experienced accounting leader with a passion for process improvement and team development? We are seeking an Interim Controller to oversee the effective operation of Corporate Accounting for a manufacturing company. This is a hands-on leadership role with significant impact on financial reporting, compliance, and operational excellence. About the Role The Interim Controller will support the Controller in managing all aspects of the accounting function, including month-end close, financial reporting, technical accounting guidance, external audits, and continuous process improvements. This position is responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining a robust system of internal controls to ensure the accuracy and integrity of financial reporting in accordance with company policies and US GAAP. The Interim Controller will oversee a team and collaborate closely with FP&A, Operations, and People & Culture to support strategic and operational initiatives. Key Responsibilities • Manage all aspects of the month-end close process, including reviewing journal entries, preparing accruals and reserves, and ensuring timely and accurate completion of the general ledger. • Review and participate in the monthly reconciliation of balance sheet accounts, ensuring accounts are reconciled timely and reconciling items are addressed appropriately. • Prepare and distribute monthly financial statements and reports in accordance with internal and external reporting requirements. • Collect, interpret, and report financial data to communicate the company’s financial position and performance. • Manage working capital by monitoring and analyzing cash inflows and outflows; partner with FP&A to create short- and long-term forecasts and provide financial insights to support decision-making. • Lead external audits (financial and 401K), including preparation of audit schedules and serving as a liaison between auditors and internal teams. • Coordinate with third-party consultants to ensure timely and accurate completion of all federal, state, and local tax reporting requirements (income, property, sales/use tax). • Maintain and strengthen internal controls, financial policies, and procedures. • Regularly review and update departmental SOPs and desk procedures to increase efficiency and accuracy. • Supervise, mentor, and develop accounting staff, including accounts payable and general accounting teams. • Conduct performance evaluations and foster a culture of accountability and continuous improvement. • Prepare ad-hoc analyses and special reports as requested by management. • Support strategic initiatives through data-driven insights and financial guidance. Qualifications and Skills Required: • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting. • Minimum 7 years of accounting experience, including 2–4 years in public accounting. • Strong knowledge of US GAAP, internal controls, and financial reporting. • Experience in preparing audit schedules and working with external auditors. • Proven ability to perform and review balance sheet account reconciliations. • Experience with Microsoft Dynamics 365 or similar ERP. • Advanced Excel and data modeling proficiency. • Demonstrated experience leading and developing accounting teams. Preferred: • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation. • Experience with Tableau or similar data visualization tools. • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with exceptional attention to detail. • Proven track record of driving process improvements and leveraging technology. • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate across departments.
