Role description
THE CHALLENGE
We are looking for an enthusiastic and driven data analyst to support our busy Impact and Evaluation team. The role offers the chance to work across a varied technical stack, Python for metrics calculation, Power BI for reporting, and with scope to get hands-on with econometrics and a lakehouse platform (a unified store for structured and unstructured data), in an environment that values innovation, collaboration, and personal growth.
Our data analyst will play a critical part in informing the organisation's decision-making process and will support strategic planning and management for impact throughout the Catapult. You will calculate and report on SMART KPIs, contribute to project and programme impact analysis and evaluation studies, and work with various teams to automate KPI calculation and reporting pipelines so that the numbers we report to our funders, senior management, and the board are refreshed reliably.
The data analyst will deliver high quality, reliable data analysis and insights, as part of the Data Science and Economics sub-team which sits within the Impact and Evaluation team. The role is responsible for designing and developing analytical solutions using a variety of technologies and techniques, and supporting the production of reports to meet the needs of diverse stakeholders.
The role offers learning and development opportunities; for example, the successful candidate will receive regular feedback and touchpoints with their management as well as peers to support personal and professional development. It also offers opportunities to share skills through training and mentoring.
Key responsibilities:
β’ Calculate and report on SMART KPIs to inform progress and performance reporting to our funders, senior management, and the board.
β’ Contribute to project and programme impact analysis and evaluation studies across a range of our programme areas.
β’ Improve the automation of KPI calculation, refresh cycles and reporting pipelines.
β’ Create and manage data systems for reporting needs.
β’ Coordinate with data owners across the Catapult and support the broader administrative workflow.
Skills & Experience
Required:
β’ You are comfortable conducting high quality, reliable data analysis and delivering insights to inform progress reporting to our funders, senior management, and the board.
β’ You are comfortable responding to evolving ad-hoc requests cascading from the senior executive team and other stakeholders, and able to reprioritise as the work demands.
β’ Ability to read, understand and adapt Python scripts used to calculate our metrics, including a working knowledge of common data structures (DataFrames, dictionaries, lists, JSON) and how data flows through an analytical pipeline, so that you can trace a KPI from raw input to reported figure.
β’ Working knowledge of Power BI for dashboarding and reporting, and a good understanding of Power Apps for building lightweight internal tools. Familiarity with Power Automate for workflow automation is also useful.
β’ An automation mindset: able to identify repetitive reporting tasks and work with relevant teams to automate them, so that KPIs are refreshed reliably and with minimal manual intervention.
β’ Team player, able to build good working relationships with stakeholders across the Catapult. You will work closely with colleagues in the Impact and Evaluation team and engage with data owners across the organisation, identifying what data is needed for monitoring and evaluation of our outputs, outcomes, and impacts, and ensuring the data provided meets the criteria for reporting against our agreed indicators.
β’ Ability to ensure that agreed reporting and monitoring processes are implemented to track progress towards delivering intended impacts, including ensuring our data gathering, storage and management systems are maintained to continuously meet these needs.
Desirable:
β’ Economic and Econometric knowledge, particularly difference-in-differences and propensity score matching. A strong plus for contributing to our evaluation studies.
β’ Experience with Databricks or another lakehouse platform (e.g. Microsoft Fabric, Snowflake), including writing SQL queries against lakehouse tables for data extraction and transformation.
About us & how we work:
We strive to create a high trust, high performance and inclusive environment that enables team members to bring their whole selves to work. This helps to create the foundations of an innovation culture. Our shared values are critical to this:
β’ We careβ―- for our people, our partners, and our planet
β’ We connectβ―- and engage with people and ideas
β’ We learnβ―- and grow, as people and as an industry
Underpinning this is our belief in great teams. Our combined efforts will always deliver outcomes beyond that of any individual, providing we are honest through debate, experiment and reflect, and create shared resolutions in support of our purpose. Live these values, work to our principles, take ownership to deliver, and we are certain you will thrive with us.
This job description set outs the skills and experience we think are needed to be able to perform in this job. If you believe you can deliver in this role then we want to hear from you.
We offer a hybrid policy which is designed around collaboration, one 'anchor' day per week working with your direct team and another flexible day per week to be spent collaborating or working with other colleagues.
Important notice for applicants: We use tools to detect plagiarism and the use of AI or chatbots for applicant answers. If plagiarism, AI use (such as ChatGPT) or similar software are found to have been used in your application you will not be considered for this or future roles within the Satellite Applications Catapult.
