Role description
Job Title: Systems Engineer II - Data Collection Operations Location: Pittsburgh, PA โ€“ Onsite Duration: 4 months (potential extension) We are looking for a Systems Engineer II to support data collection operations in research and lab environments. This is a hands-on, operational role focused on maintaining, troubleshooting, and improving systems used in user studies and technical capture setups. You will work closely with cross-functional teams including engineers, researchers, and operations staff to ensure systems run reliably during live data collection sessions. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys problem-solving in real-world environments, working with both hardware and software systems, and improving processes over time. Required Qualifications: 2+ years of experience in systems, IT support, or lab/research environments Strong experience with command-line interfaces (CLI) (required) Hands-on troubleshooting across Linux, Windows, and macOS Basic understanding of networking concepts and debugging Experience with scripting in Bash and/or Python Strong communication and collaboration skills Ability to work onsite and support live operational environments Preferred Qualifications: Experience with AV systems, capture setups, or media hardware Familiarity with camera systems, lighting, or audio equipment Exposure to VR, AR, or hardware lab environments Ability to write scripts/tools from scratch Strong documentation and process improvement mindset Experience with complex hardware/software systems troubleshooting Responsibilities: Troubleshoot and maintain systems across Linux, Windows, and macOS environments Use command-line tools to diagnose and resolve system issues Perform basic network troubleshooting (connectivity, DNS, DHCP, routing) Support data capture and research operations, ensuring system readiness Maintain and enhance automation scripts (Bash/Python) to improve workflows Assist with hardware and AV systems including cameras, audio, and capture setups Identify and resolve root causes of technical issues Work across multiple projects, prioritizing and managing competing needs Collaborate with technical and non-technical stakeholders Document issues, processes, and solutions to improve repeatability Follow strict data handling and privacy protocols for participant-based studies
