Role description
Power BI & Data Reporting Consultant (Contract)
Location: Houston, TX (Onsite Preferred)
Duration: 3–4 months (with possible extension)
Summary
Our Oil & Gas client is seeking a Data Consultant to provide immediate, hands-on support for critical data and reporting systems within the organization. The team recently lost key personnel responsible for Power BI and related tools, resulting in a knowledge gap and backlog of maintenance and documentation.
This role is ideal for a senior Power BI professional who can step in quickly, troubleshoot existing issues, rebuild and optimize reporting processes, and establish sustainable documentation and training materials. The consultant will also mentor team members to ensure long-term continuity and operational self-sufficiency.
This is a consultative engagement, not a typical staff augmentation role — we’re looking for someone who can execute, improve, and train others to ensure a smooth handoff at the end of the project.
Key Responsibilities
• Audit, repair, and optimize existing Power BI dashboards and data pipelines used across operations and finance functions.
• Rebuild and maintain Power BI models and reports, ensuring data accuracy and performance.
• Collaborate with business users to understand data workflows and document processes, ownership, and dependencies for future maintenance.
• Develop training materials and desktop procedures to support cross-training and knowledge transfer.
• Support data extraction and transformation efforts using Alteryx DVW connector for SAP integration to automate data flows into Power BI.
• Provide ad hoc Power BI development to address immediate business needs — e.g., modifying reports to capture new data elements such as tariff analytics or operational KPIs.
• Evaluate current tools and recommend process improvements or automation opportunities.
• Train other team members on best practices for Power BI maintenance, data connection management, and report refresh procedures.
• Work independently to identify issues, execute solutions, and follow through with documentation and communication.
Qualifications
• 7+ years of experience in data analytics, reporting, or business intelligence roles, with a focus on Power BI.
• Proven ability to rebuild, enhance, and troubleshoot Power BI dashboards, data models, and DAX formulas.
• Strong experience using Alteryx to extract, transform, and automate data pipelines from SAP or similar ERP systems.
• Familiarity with DVW Alteryx Connector (SAP Data Warehouse) or equivalent data connection environments preferred.
• Working knowledge of Smartsheet for task automation, workflow management, or reporting is a plus (willingness to learn is essential).
• Advanced Excel skills, including pivot tables, formulas, and data visualization.
• Strong documentation, communication, and training skills — able to translate technical knowledge into clear, repeatable processes.
• Self-starter with high initiative; comfortable operating with limited supervision and driving work to completion.
Engagement Details
• Duration: 3–4 months minimum expectation
• Hours: 40 hours per week (flexible scheduling; core hours 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. CST)
• Type: W-2 Contracted Consultant
• Environment: Onsite preferred; must be comfortable working both independently and in collaboration with client team members.
• Overtime: Not anticipated.
Ideal Candidate Attributes
• A hands-on Power BI expert with the curiosity and resourcefulness to diagnose and solve complex reporting challenges.
• Able to work autonomously, prioritize issues, and communicate proactively.
• Possesses a consultant mindset — focused on delivery, knowledge transfer, and leaving the team stronger than when they arrived.
• Comfortable executing fixes directly while also documenting and training others to maintain sustainability.
• Strong sense of ownership and accountability for deliverables, with an eye toward long-term process improvement.
