Position: Data Engineer
Location: Remote, Los Angeles, CA, 90012
Duration: 08/17/2026 - 08/16/2027 Position Description The Data Engineer works under the direction of an IT Manager or user agency personnel and is responsible for data extraction, analysis, mapping, and conversion activities, including profiling, cleansing, transforming, validating, and loading data from multiple legacy systems into the target solution while ensuring data integrity and reconciliation. The Data Engineer will contribute to defining data requirements, support cross-agency coordination, and help ensure that converted data meets the needs of business users. The Data Engineer will support coordination across organizational units, assist with planning and communication of data conversion activities, and contribute to issue identification and effective information flow among stakeholders. The Data Engineer will also facilitate knowledge transfer or training activities to ensure staff understand and can work with converted data. Skills Required The Data Engineer will possess strong knowledge and experience of legacy systems, flat files, mainframe-extracted data, and structured or unstructured datasets. The Data Engineer will have experience supporting data mapping and crosswalk analysis across organization and vendors, as well as interpreting legacy formats and data dictionaries. The Data Engineer will understand key data conversion requirements such as retention needs, cutover sequencing, and identifying required data elements; have familiarity with ETL processes, reconciliation, encrypted file validation, SFTP structures, and source-to-target relationships; ability to document extraction logic and validation rules, effective cross-organization coordination, and the ability to resolve data inconsistencies and quality issues; and knowledge of government data retention and compliance standards. Experience Required This classification requires a minimum of three (3) years of experience supporting field mapping, crosswalk analysis, and data validation during conversion efforts, including troubleshooting data quality issues such as blob-size anomalies and variable-length errors; three (3) years of experience participating in organization coordination activities, including file reviews and data dictionary prioritization, and working with encrypted test files and regulated data; and three (3) years of experience working with legacy and relational data technologies such as mainframe environments, DB2, FOCUS, Oracle, and Microsoft SQL Server are also required. Education Required A bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, data science, engineering, or a closely related field. Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
