Overview
We are seeking an experienced Data Focused BSA / Product Owner to support a large-scale enterprise data transformation initiative. This role will work at the intersection of business, product, data, and engineering, helping translate complex business needs into clear, technically sound requirements that engineering teams can execute.
This is a hands-on, data-focused role for someone who enjoys solving complex problems. The ideal candidate is comfortable investigating unclear requirements, analyzing data and legacy processes, identifying gaps, challenging assumptions, and bringing structure to ambiguous situations.
You will partner closely with business stakeholders and technical teams to define data products, improve requirements and intake processes, prioritize work, and support the modernization of enterprise data platforms.
Key Responsibilities
• Gather, analyze, refine, and document business, data, reporting, and technical requirements.
• Translate ambiguous or incomplete business requests into clear, actionable, ready-to-build requirements.
• Partner with stakeholders to understand business objectives, data needs, definitions, dependencies, and downstream impacts.
• Investigate existing datasets, databases, stored procedures, reporting logic, and legacy processes to understand how current-state solutions operate.
• Translate legacy data processes and business logic into requirements for modern data platforms and engineering solutions.
• Perform data analysis and profiling using SQL, including joins, reconciliation, validation, and root-cause analysis of data discrepancies.
• Partner closely with data engineers, analytics teams, platform teams, product leaders, and business stakeholders.
• Develop user stories, acceptance criteria, functional requirements, process flows, data definitions, and decision documentation.
• Identify gaps, assumptions, risks, blockers, dependencies, and unresolved questions throughout the delivery lifecycle.
• Ensure engineering teams receive requirements with sufficient business context, data definitions, and acceptance criteria.
• Support the development and modernization of data products, datasets, pipelines, reporting assets, metrics, and platform capabilities.
• Manage and prioritize intake, backlog items, competing stakeholder requests, and delivery priorities.
• Help translate broader business objectives into phased, executable roadmaps and engineering work.
• Challenge assumptions and push back diplomatically when requirements are incomplete, conflicting, or technically impractical.
• Take ownership of initiatives from initial discovery through requirements, delivery, validation, and implementation.
Required Qualifications
• 5+ years of experience as a Business Systems Analyst, Business Analyst, Data Analyst, Systems Analyst, Product Owner, or similar role.
• Strong hands-on experience supporting data, analytics, reporting, data engineering, or data platform initiatives.
• Strong SQL skills and experience analyzing, profiling, validating, joining, and reconciling data.
• Experience translating complex or poorly defined business needs into detailed technical and functional requirements.
• Experience analyzing existing data processes, business logic, databases, stored procedures, reporting environments, or legacy systems.
• Strong understanding of data concepts including datasets, data pipelines, data transformations, source systems, reporting logic, and downstream consumption.
• Demonstrated ability to work directly with business stakeholders and technical engineering teams.
• Experience writing user stories, acceptance criteria, business requirements, functional requirements, and supporting documentation.
• Strong analytical, investigative, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to operate independently in fast-moving environments where processes and requirements may not yet be fully defined.
• Strong communication, facilitation, stakeholder management, and organizational skills.
• Demonstrated ownership of projects or initiatives from discovery through delivery.
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience with enterprise data modernization, cloud migration, data platform, or data transformation initiatives.
• Experience with modern data platforms or technologies such as Databricks, Snowflake, dbt, or similar tools.
• Experience with data lineage, data quality, data governance, semantic layers, or enterprise metric definitions.
• Experience working with both traditional/on-premise SQL environments and modern cloud-based data platforms.
• Prior Product Owner experience, including backlog management, prioritization, intake processes, and roadmap development.
• Experience with Agile delivery methodologies and tools such as Jira, Azure DevOps, Confluence, or similar platforms.
• Experience supporting financial services, banking, mortgage, fintech, capital markets, servicing, marketing, customer operations, or other data-intensive business functions.
• Exposure to cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or GCP.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is a data-focused problem solver who thinks beyond traditional requirements documentation. You should be comfortable digging into unfamiliar datasets, tracing business logic, investigating discrepancies, and determining how an existing process actually works before defining how it should work in the future.
You are not simply an order taker. You ask thoughtful questions, challenge assumptions, identify missing information, and help stakeholders clarify what they actually need.
You should be technically credible enough to work directly with data engineers while also being able to communicate effectively with business stakeholders and senior leaders. Success in this role requires curiosity, accountability, strong analytical instincts, and the ability to take ownership of complex problems from discovery through delivery.
