Role description
Data Governance Lead
Role Purpose
Lead the design and execution of the governance framework, ensuring Southern Company Gas achieves trusted, compliant, and business-aligned use of data and AI. Serve as the primary authority for governance policies, role definitions, and oversight of stewardship practices.
Responsibilities
• Design and implement governance frameworks covering data, information, and AI governance.
• Define data ownership, stewardship, and custodianship role models across domains.
• Establish and maintain governance councils, working groups, and decision-making bodies.
• Partner with business domains to prioritize and manage governance use cases.
• Drive maturity assessments (CMMI, DAMA-DMBOK) and deliver baseline/target state models.
• Define and enforce governance policies, standards, and escalation processes.
• Oversee regulatory alignment (SOX, PHMSA, NERC, GDPR/CCPA if applicable).
• Build business cases to secure investment in governance tools and processes.
Qualifications
• 12+ years in data governance, data management, or enterprise data strategy.
• Proven success in implementing enterprise-wide governance frameworks.
• Expertise in DAMA-DMBOK, CMMI, and regulatory compliance frameworks.
• Deep familiarity with metadata/catalog tools (Collibra, Informatica EDC, Erwin, Unity Catalog).
• Strong leadership and influence skills, with the ability to operate at both executive and operational levels.
Preferred Certifications
• DAMA CDMP (Master or Fellow level)
• CIPP/E (if privacy scope expands)
• TOGAF
Mandatory Databricks Certifications
• Databricks Certified Data Engineer Professional (or Advanced)
• Databricks Lakehouse Fundamentals
• Unity Catalog specialization (preferred)
Mandatory Databricks Certifications
• Databricks Lakehouse Fundamentals Certification
• Familiarity with Unity Catalog governance features (preferred)
