Database Engineer

BCforward is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Database Engineer Note: Need someone local to AZ. Position: Database Engineer Worksite: Phoenix, AZ Hybrid Duration: Long Term Contract Client: American Express Up to $62 w2 and $70 CTC Digital Workplace (DW) enables all Client colleagues to do exceptional work in a complex, dynamic, and evolving environment. You will work within our TechCare Operations: Blueprint team, partnering closely with database engineering, application, and infrastructure teams to ensure the reliability, performance, and security of enterprise database platforms. You will support mission-critical systems and help drive database strategy, standards, and operational excellence. Critical Focus Areas Administer, maintain, and optimize enterprise database systems to ensure high availability and performance Monitor database health, troubleshoot issues, and resolve incidents in a timely manner Implement database backup, recovery, and disaster recovery strategies Ensure data integrity, security, and compliance with enterprise standards Support capacity planning, performance tuning, and scalability initiatives Collaborate with engineering teams to support application deployments and database changes Key Responsibilities Manage and support database platforms (e.g., DB2 z/OS, Oracle, SQL Server, PostgreSQL, Netezza) across development, test, and production environments Perform database installation, configuration, patching, and upgrades Monitor database performance and proactively tune queries, indexes, and configurations Implement and maintain backup, recovery, and high-availability solutions (e.g., replication, clustering) Troubleshoot database-related incidents, perform root cause analysis, and implement preventive measures Partner with application and product teams to review database designs and ensure optimal data structures Enforce database security standards, including access controls, encryption, and auditing Automate routine DBA tasks using scripting languages (e.g., Python, Shell, PowerShell) Document database configurations, processes, and operational procedures Support data migrations, releases, and environment refreshes Participate in on-call support rotations and incident response Education & Experience Database administration experience in a professional environment and/or comparable experience such as: Experience administering one or more database platforms (e.g., DB2 z/OS, Oracle, SQL Server, PostgreSQL, Netezza) Familiarity with database backup/recovery, high availability, and disaster recovery concepts Experience with performance tuning and query optimization Experience with scripting/automation (Shell, Python, PowerShell, etc.) Familiarity with Agile or other rapid application development methodologies Understanding of distributed systems and multi-tier architectures Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, or related field required; advanced degree preferred Preferred Qualifications Experience with database monitoring and observability tools Knowledge of cloud database platforms (AWS RDS, Azure SQL, etc.) Experience with data modeling and database design principles Familiarity with NoSQL databases and big data platforms High-Performing Behaviors Proactively identifies and resolves database performance and reliability issues Challenges the status quo and drives continuous improvement in database operations Stays current with database technologies, tools, and industry trends Communicates clearly with technical and non-technical stakeholders Collaborates effectively across teams to achieve shared objectives Demonstrates ownership, accountability, and strong problem-solving skills Adapts quickly to changing priorities and operational needs Knowledge / Skills Strong understanding of database administration concepts (backup/recovery, performance tuning, security, and availability) Ability to analyze and resolve complex database issues Knowledge of data structures, indexing strategies, and query optimization Understanding of metadata management and database architecture Experience with database monitoring, alerting, and troubleshooting tools Familiarity with infrastructure components (servers, storage, networking) Working knowledge of SDLC methodologies and operational best practices Strong understanding of Service Now data Technology Core Competencies Database Administration & Operations Performance Tuning & Optimization Automation & Scripting Infrastructure & Platform Knowledge Agile Practices Technical Problem Solving Role Core Competencies Technical Database Administration Performance & Tuning High Availability & Disaster Recovery System/Platform Knowledge Functional Data Management Database Operations Incident & Problem Management Leadership Analytical Thinking Decision-Making Collaboration Business Problem Solving Operational Excellence
