Role description
Compass Group is seeking an experienced Database Engineer to support the modernization of our data platforms, including the migration of mission-critical systems from Microsoft SQL Server to PostgreSQL. This role will play a key part in improving scalability, performance, and long-term maintainability across applications that support our diverse portfolio of brands and business lines. The ideal candidate has hands-on experience executing SQL Server to PostgreSQL migrations in complex, enterprise environments and can collaborate closely with application, infrastructure, and security teams. Key Responsibilities β€’ Design and execute database migrations from Microsoft SQL Server to PostgreSQL for enterprise-scale applications β€’ Assess existing SQL Server environments and translate schemas, data models, and database logic to PostgreSQL best practices β€’ Convert and refactor T-SQL (stored procedures, functions, triggers, views) into PostgreSQL-compatible SQL and PL/pgSQL β€’ Identify and resolve differences in data types, indexing strategies, constraints, collations, and transaction behavior β€’ Optimize PostgreSQL performance post-migration, including query tuning and indexing strategies β€’ Support low-risk, low-downtime migration strategies for operational systems β€’ Collaborate with application development teams (including .NET teams) to address database dependencies and refactor application queries as needed β€’ Establish standards for PostgreSQL security, backups, monitoring, and operational support β€’ Create and maintain documentation, runbooks, and migration playbooks β€’ Participate in on-call or escalation support for database-related production issues as required Required Qualifications β€’ 5+ years of experience as a Database Engineer, DBA, or similar role in an enterprise environment β€’ Strong expertise in Microsoft SQL Server, including T-SQL, indexing, and performance tuning β€’ Demonstrated experience migrating production databases from SQL Server to PostgreSQL β€’ Solid understanding of PostgreSQL architecture, query planner behavior, and indexing β€’ Experience working with large, transactional datasets and business-critical systems β€’ Proficiency in SQL and relational data modeling β€’ Experience operating databases in Linux-based environments Preferred Qualifications β€’ Experience supporting enterprise or multi-tenant platforms β€’ Familiarity with cloud-hosted databases (AWS RDS/Aurora PostgreSQL, Azure PostgreSQL) β€’ Experience with data migration tooling (pgLoader, AWS DMS, custom scripts) β€’ Exposure to CI/CD pipelines for database changes β€’ Experience supporting applications in regulated, audited, or high-availability environments Nice to Have β€’ Experience with Compass Group–style operational systems (point-of-sale, inventory, supply chain, finance, or workforce platforms) β€’ Knowledge of PostgreSQL replication, high availability, or disaster recovery strategies β€’ Experience retiring legacy SQL Server features such as SQL Agent jobs or CLR components β€’ Background working closely with .NET application teams About INSPYR Solutions Technology is our focus and quality is our commitment.
