Database Engineer

Compass Group is seeking an experienced Database Engineer to support the modernization of our data platforms, including the migration of mission-critical systems from Microsoft SQL Server to PostgreSQL. This role will play a key part in improving scalability, performance, and long-term maintainability across applications that support our diverse portfolio of brands and business lines. The ideal candidate has hands-on experience executing SQL Server to PostgreSQL migrations in complex, enterprise environments and can collaborate closely with application, infrastructure, and security teams. Key Responsibilities • Design and execute database migrations from Microsoft SQL Server to PostgreSQL for enterprise-scale applications • Assess existing SQL Server environments and translate schemas, data models, and database logic to PostgreSQL best practices • Convert and refactor T-SQL (stored procedures, functions, triggers, views) into PostgreSQL-compatible SQL and PL/pgSQL • Identify and resolve differences in data types, indexing strategies, constraints, collations, and transaction behavior • Optimize PostgreSQL performance post-migration, including query tuning and indexing strategies • Support low-risk, low-downtime migration strategies for operational systems • Collaborate with application development teams (including .NET teams) to address database dependencies and refactor application queries as needed • Establish standards for PostgreSQL security, backups, monitoring, and operational support • Create and maintain documentation, runbooks, and migration playbooks • Participate in on-call or escalation support for database-related production issues as required Required Qualifications • 5+ years of experience as a Database Engineer, DBA, or similar role in an enterprise environment • Strong expertise in Microsoft SQL Server, including T-SQL, indexing, and performance tuning • Demonstrated experience migrating production databases from SQL Server to PostgreSQL • Solid understanding of PostgreSQL architecture, query planner behavior, and indexing • Experience working with large, transactional datasets and business-critical systems • Proficiency in SQL and relational data modeling • Experience operating databases in Linux-based environments Preferred Qualifications • Experience supporting enterprise or multi-tenant platforms • Familiarity with cloud-hosted databases (AWS RDS/Aurora PostgreSQL, Azure PostgreSQL) • Experience with data migration tooling (pgLoader, AWS DMS, custom scripts) • Exposure to CI/CD pipelines for database changes • Experience supporting applications in regulated, audited, or high-availability environments Nice to Have • Experience with Compass Group–style operational systems (point-of-sale, inventory, supply chain, finance, or workforce platforms) • Knowledge of PostgreSQL replication, high availability, or disaster recovery strategies • Experience retiring legacy SQL Server features such as SQL Agent jobs or CLR components • Background working closely with .NET application teams About INSPYR Solutions Technology is our focus and quality is our commitment.
