Role description
Job Title: Azure DevOps Engineer
Location: Remote (MUST be UK Based)
Rate: £475/day Inside IR35
Duration: 6 Months
About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Azure DevOps Engineer to support a major digital transformation programme within a central government department. This role will focus on designing, building, and optimising cloud infrastructure, CI/CD pipelines, and automation solutions to deliver secure, scalable, and resilient platforms in line with government and GDS standards.
You will collaborate closely with developers, architects, and platform teams to drive best practice in DevOps and cloud engineering, ensuring delivery of high-quality services for citizens and government stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
• Design, implement, and maintain CI/CD pipelines in Azure DevOps.
• Deploy and manage Azure infrastructure using Infrastructure as Code (ARM/Bicep/Terraform).
• Build and maintain monitoring, logging, and alerting solutions to ensure system reliability and performance.
• Collaborate with development teams to integrate automation, testing, and security into the delivery pipeline.
• Implement containerisation and orchestration solutions (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes, AKS).
• Ensure compliance with government security standards and contribute to achieving accreditation.
• Support platform reliability through incident response, root cause analysis, and continuous improvement.
• Provide technical guidance and knowledge transfer across engineering teams.
Skills & Experience Required
• Proven track record as an Azure DevOps Engineer, ideally within UK central government or other highly regulated environments.
• Strong hands-on experience with Azure DevOps Services (Repos, Pipelines, Boards, Artifacts).
• Expertise in Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, Bicep, or ARM).
• Solid understanding of cloud networking, security, and identity management (Azure AD, RBAC, Key Vault).
• Experience with containers and Kubernetes (AKS).
• Knowledge of automation and scripting (PowerShell, Bash, Python, or similar).
• Familiarity with monitoring and observability tools (Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, Application Insights, Prometheus, Grafana).
• Understanding of GDS service standards and public sector security/compliance requirements.
Desirable
• Experience in multi-cloud or hybrid cloud environments.
• Knowledge of ITIL, Agile, and DevSecOps practices.
• Previous experience working in agile delivery teams within government digital programmes.
