Role description
FHIR Health Data Consultant
(Outside IR35)
Fully Remote
3-month initial Contract (12 Months scope)
February Start
Role overview
We are supporting a large UK-based healthcare and interoperability programme delivered by a major technology consultancy for a private healthcare provider. The programme is centred around the adoption of FHIR R4 to enable consistent, governed data exchange and downstream integration.
We are seeking a Senior FHIR Healthcare Data Consultant to play a pivotal role in owning and driving the adoption of FHIR standards across the organisation.
The focus is on FHIR standards ownership, implementation guide development, and enabling delivery teams through clear and consistent use of FHIR.
Key responsibilities
FHIR standards & implementation guides
• Own and evolve FHIR R4 Implementation Guides
• Author and maintain:
• FHIR profiles
• Extensions
• ValueSets and CodeSystems
• Terminologies
• Example FHIR resources
• Ensure conformance and consistency across all FHIR artefacts
• Act as the point of authority on how FHIR is applied across the programme
Standards adoption & delivery enablement
• Define and embed processes for adopting FHIR across delivery teams
• Drive consistent use of standards across:
• Business stakeholders, Business Analysts, Architects & Integration teams
• Operate effectively in an environment with limited existing governance or maturity
• Unblock downstream delivery by removing ambiguity and improving standardisation
Translating business intent into FHIR
• Aggregate fragmented and inconsistent business inputs into coherent use cases
• Translate business context and requirements into structured FHIR mappings
• Bridge the gap between non-technical stakeholders and technical delivery teams
• Shape and improve processes rather than relying on predefined task lists
Technical interaction (supporting, not core development)
• Work hands-on with code-based FHIR artefacts and tooling
• Maintain and enhance:
• Implementation Guide artefacts
• Auto-generated documentation and definition pipelines
• Supporting scripts and configuration (e.g. VS Code-based workflows)
• Collaborate closely with integration teams who build APIs and services
Required experience
• Strong, hands-on experience with FHIR R4
• Proven experience authoring and maintaining:
• FHIR profiles and extensions
• Implementation Guides
• Solid understanding of healthcare data standards and interoperability
• Comfortable operating autonomously in ambiguous or early-maturity environments
• Able to lead through influence, standards, and process ownership rather than hierarchy
• Experience working closely with architects and integration teams
Desirable experience
• FHIR Shorthand (FSH)
• FHIR Query Language (FQL)
• Experience with FHIR tooling such as Simplifier or similar platforms
• UK healthcare or NHS-aligned interoperability programmes
• Experience driving standards adoption within organisations undergoing transformation
