Job Summary
BNY is seeking a Linux Systems Administrator to support production infrastructure within a private cloud and data analytics environment serving financial services clients. This role focuses on hands-on system administration, data center support, incident response, and operational maintenance across Linux and Windows environments.
This role is based in Pittsburgh, PA with a hybrid schedule requiring at least two days onsite per week, with additional onsite presence as needed. Standard working hours of 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM ET, with occasional weekend support required.
Key Responsibilities
- Linux & Windows Administration: Perform OS installation, configuration, patching, and security hardening across Linux and Windows environments. Support performance tuning, system troubleshooting, and backup/restore validation.
- Production Support & Incident Response: Provide hands-on support for production systems, including real-time incident triage, log and metric analysis, and execution of runbooks to restore service and reduce MTTR.
- Data Center Operations: Support rack and stack activities, cable management, hardware diagnostics, and vendor coordination (RMA). Assist with power and connectivity checks and basic infrastructure troubleshooting.
- Monitoring & Alert Response: Respond to system alerts, investigate performance issues, and utilize internal documentation and tools to identify and resolve root causes.
- Preventative Maintenance: Conduct system health checks, assist with firmware upgrades, and support capacity planning and disaster recovery (DR) testing activities.
- Change Management & Documentation: Participate in change management processes (RFCs), document procedures, support audit requirements, and maintain accurate asset and system records.
- Collaboration & Escalation: Work closely with senior engineers and SMEs to escalate complex issues and ensure timely resolution. Communicate effectively with internal stakeholders during incidents.
- Automation & Continuous Improvement: Support basic automation efforts using scripting tools (Python, Bash, Ansible) and explore emerging technologies such as AI-assisted operational tools.
Qualifications
- 2+ years of experience in Linux and/or Windows system administration
- Basic to mid-level experience supporting production environments
- Familiarity with VMware virtualization technologies
- Strong troubleshooting skills across OS, hardware, and infrastructure issues
- Ability to follow runbooks and operational procedures in high-pressure environments
- Strong attention to detail and ability to work with system logs, alerts, and documentation
- Excellent communication skills and willingness to collaborate and ask questions
- Ability to work occasional weekends and adapt to changing operational demands
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field (or equivalent experience)
Preferred Experience
- Experience with scripting or automation tools (Python, Bash, Ansible)
- Exposure to cloud platforms (e.g., Azure)
- Basic understanding of data center operations (rack/stack, cabling, power distribution)
- Familiarity with monitoring tools and incident management processes
- Exposure to AI-assisted tools (e.g., Copilot, Windsurf, similar technologies)
- Experience within financial services or other high-availability environments
