IT FinOps Engineer Job Summary The IT FinOps Engineer plays a critical role in managing and optimizing cloud financial operations across the organization. This position serves as a strategic bridge between finance, engineering, and operations to ensure cost-effective cloud usage, financial accountability, and alignment with business objectives. Key Responsibilities Cloud Cost Observability & Monitoring β€’ Build and maintain real-time cost observability pipelines β€’ Develop dashboards and alerts to monitor cloud spend and detect usage anomalies Cost Allocation & Chargeback β€’ Implement tagging strategies for accurate cost attribution β€’ Design and manage chargeback/showback models for internal stakeholders Cost Optimization & Efficiency β€’ Analyze cloud usage to identify cost-saving opportunities β€’ Automate processes to eliminate idle resources and enforce usage policies Unit Economics & ROI Analysis β€’ Calculate unit economics for cloud services β€’ Evaluate ROI of cloud investments and optimization initiatives Governance & Best Practices β€’ Define and enforce FinOps policies and standards β€’ Develop governance frameworks to ensure cost accountability Reporting & Stakeholder Communication β€’ Create reports and dashboards for finance, engineering, and leadership β€’ Communicate trends, forecasts, and actionable insights Cross-Functional Collaboration β€’ Partner with DevOps, engineering, and finance teams β€’ Align cloud spend with business and technical objectives Budgeting, Forecasting & Vendor Management β€’ Support cloud budgeting and forecasting processes β€’ Assist in vendor negotiations and contract management Education & Cultural Enablement β€’ Promote a FinOps-first mindset across teams β€’ Conduct training sessions and develop documentation/playbooks Continuous Improvement β€’ Review and refine cost-saving initiatives regularly β€’ Stay current with cloud pricing models and FinOps tools Skills & Qualifications Education & Certifications β€’ Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Finance, Information Technology, or a related field β€’ FinOps Foundation Certified Practitioner or relevant cloud certifications (AWS, Azure, GCP) preferred Technical Skills β€’ Proficiency in cloud platforms: AWS, Azure, GCP β€’ Experience with cloud cost management tools (e.g., CloudHealth, Apptio, AWS Cost Explorer) β€’ Familiarity with scripting and automation (Python, SQL, Terraform, PowerShell) β€’ Strong understanding of Infrastructure as Code (IaC) and containerization (e.g., Kubernetes) β€’ Data visualization and reporting tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI) Financial & Analytical Skills β€’ Deep understanding of cloud pricing models and billing structures β€’ Ability to perform ROI analysis, unit economics, and budget forecasting β€’ Strong analytical and problem-solving skills Soft Skills β€’ Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills β€’ Ability to work cross-functionally and drive cost accountability β€’ Experience in vendor negotiation and contract management
