Role description
Power BI Developer (Business-Focused Analytics) - No Vendors please, must be a Colorado Resident.
We are seeking a Power BI Developer who is equally comfortable with business conversations as they are with technical execution. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in lean teams, can lead working sessions with stakeholders, and knows when to pause, listen, and translate questions into actual requirements—not assumptions.
This is not a “heads-down-only” developer role. Success in this position requires strong situational awareness, the ability to read the room, and confidence facilitating meetings, screen-sharing, and consolidating loosely defined ideas into scalable analytics solutions.
What Makes This Role Different
• You’ll work closely with stakeholders who may be exploring possibilities, not always making direct requests
• You’ll help clarify intent before building—avoiding the common trap of “building what was asked instead of what was needed”
• You’ll validate dashboards and logic using Excel-based modeling, not just Power BI outputs
• You’ll reverse engineer existing reports and models to improve performance, clarity, and usability
Key Responsibilities
Business Engagement & Collaboration
• Lead and participate in working sessions with business stakeholders, including requirement-gathering meetings and backlog discussions
• Ask thoughtful follow-up questions to distinguish between exploratory questions and actual feature requests
• Translate business needs into clear technical requirements and scalable data models
• Present insights and dashboards to non-technical audiences with clarity and confidence
Power BI Development & Data Modeling
• Design and build efficient, scalable data models aligned to business requirements
• Create and manage relationships between tables and optimize data structures for performance
• Develop interactive Power BI reports and dashboards using slicers, drill-throughs, and intuitive visuals
DAX & Power Query
• Write and optimize DAX formulas, including calculated columns, measures, and custom calculations
• Analyze and refactor existing DAX logic to improve performance and maintainability
• Review and optimize Power Query transformations
Data Source Connectivity
• Connect Power BI to various data sources (SQL databases, Excel files, and other structured sources)
• Ensure reliable data extraction, transformation, and refresh processes
Excel Modeling & Validation
• Build Excel models to validate dashboard outputs and test business logic
• Use complex formulas, pivot tables, and analytical techniques
• Reverse engineer existing Excel workbooks to understand formulas, dependencies, and hidden logic
Reverse Engineering & Optimization
• Deconstruct existing Power BI reports, datasets, and Excel models
• Identify inefficiencies, redesign logic, and recreate improved solutions
• Analyze existing DAX, Power Query steps, pivot tables, and (where applicable) Excel macros
Documentation
• Create and maintain clear documentation, including:
• Data dictionaries
• Data flow diagrams
• Process maps and reporting logic
• Ensure documentation supports long-term usability, onboarding, and consistency
Power BI Service & Deployment
• Publish and manage reports in the Power BI Service
• Configure access controls and workspace permissions
• Schedule and monitor refreshes
• Optimize report performance for large or complex datasets
AI & Modern Analytics Tooling
• Leverage AI tools to improve efficiency in data analysis, documentation, or development workflows
• Stay curious and adaptable as analytics tooling evolves
Required Skills & Experience
• Strong Power BI development experience with real-world business stakeholders
• Proficiency in DAX and data modeling best practices
• Intermediate to advanced Excel skills (modeling, formulas, pivot tables, reverse engineering)
• Experience leading meetings, screen-sharing, and facilitating working sessions
• Ability to explain technical concepts clearly to non-technical audiences
• Proven comfort working in lean, fast-moving teams
