Overview
A seasoned Power BI Lead is needed for a focused 90 day engagement. This person will assess the current BI environment, drive a structured cleanup effort, and lead a small team to improve reporting quality, governance, and reliability. The ideal candidate is a hands-on technical leader with strong BI project management experience and the ability to self-start and execute with minimal oversight.
Core Mission for the First 90 Days
Lead and deliver a targeted cleanup and standardization of the existing Power BI ecosystem including reports, datasets, dataflows, refresh processes, and governance. This role will also coordinate and guide team members to execute a prioritized improvement backlog and establish a sustainable BI operating model moving forward.
Why This Role Exists
The current Power BI environment requires rationalization and structure. Reports and datasets may be duplicated, performance issues are likely, ownership may be unclear, and multiple versions of truth may exist. The team needs a Power BI expert who can map the current state, build a practical plan, and manage contributors to deliver measurable improvements quickly.
Scope of Work
Discovery and Assessment
Inventory all Power BI assets including reports, datasets, dataflows, gateways, RLS rules, workspaces, and refresh schedules
Identify owners and current usage patterns
Surface key issues such as performance bottlenecks, broken refreshes, redundant datasets, security gaps, and ungoverned workspaces
Prioritization and Planning
Build a short, ranked improvement backlog based on usage and executive visibility
Create a 90 day delivery plan with weekly sprints and a clear Now, Next, Later roadmap
Cleanup and Standardization
Consolidate and standardize semantic models and shared datasets
Implement consistent naming conventions, folder structures, and documentation standards
Apply standardized DAX formatting and centralized shared measures
Introduce standardized report themes and UX elements
Fix dataset and dataflow refreshes and improve performance where needed
Governance and Operating Model
Define workspace strategy including Dev, Test, and Prod
Establish roles, permissions, and consistent RLS or OLS approaches
Set up change control processes, deployment pipelines, and PBIX source control
Clarify ownership of datasets, reports, and refresh responsibilities
Team Leadership and Enablement
Run standups, manage sprint execution, and unblock team members
Coach analysts on modeling, DAX, and performance tuning best practices
Produce runbooks, playbooks, and complete handover documentation
Key Outcomes and Success Metrics
Priority reports load in under 5 to 10 seconds
Scheduled refresh success rate at 99 percent or higher for Tier 1 content
One certified dataset per major subject area with reduced redundancy
Fully documented Dev, Test, Prod workspaces with clear RBAC and RLS
Standardized report navigation, themes, and guidance notes
Increase in adoption and satisfaction for certified reports
Complete handover documentation and clearly assigned ongoing ownership
Required Skills and Experience
Power BI Technical Leadership
Expertise in data modeling, star schema design, DAX, Power Query, and Performance Analyzer
Experience building and managing semantic models and shared datasets
Strong knowledge of RLS or OLS, workspace setups, certification, and governance
Ability to troubleshoot refresh failures, gateway issues, and incremental refresh
Project and People Leadership
Ability to run a structured 90 day plan with sprints and standups
Experience coordinating analysts, engineers, and SMEs
Strong communication skills with executives and business stakeholders
Self Starter Mindset
Able to independently assess an environment and build a plan from scratch
Skilled at stakeholder discovery and determining priorities
Comfortable driving clarity even with ambiguous requirements
Additional Notes
This role is designed for someone who can lead by example, collaborate across teams, and deliver meaningful improvements within a compressed timeframe. The successful candidate must be both hands-on and capable of guiding others.
