Role description
Originally named, Great British Nuclear, Great British Energy Nuclear is an arm’s length body of the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, dedicated to supporting the development and deployment of new nuclear technologies in Great Britain. We play acrucial role in advancing nuclear new build, ensuring the UK’s energy security and achieving net-zero carbon emissions. Great British Energy – Nuclear focuses on fostering innovation, facilitating investment, and coordinating efforts across the nuclear industry to build a resilient and sustainable energy future. Great British Energy – Nuclear’s first step was to start the technology selection process for Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) in 2023. SMRs can potentially be quicker to deploy and less expensive to build than traditional nuclear power plants because they are smaller, have factory-based modular manufacturing and more flexible deployment options. In June 2025, Great British Energy – Nuclear announced that Rolls-Royce SMR had been selected as the preferred bidder to build the UK’s first SMRs, following a technology selection process that began in 2023. Great British Energy – Nuclear is aiming to deliver fast, based on a supportive and collaborative culture which values equality and diversity and creates an inclusive workplace. We draw on deep nuclear expertise – our Executive Committee has over 100 years of nuclear experience at home and abroad. GBE-N will unlock billions of pounds of private and public investment from design to operation, helping to get sites ready for development, and working to grow manufacturing capacity and skills capability. Our activities will be driven by our values, which are: Trust – We prioritise safety, we act responsibly and with integrity. Collaboration – We work as a team; we value diversity and expertise. Challenge – We are curious and courageous in the way we think and act. Care – We are thoughtful, inclusive and respectful of others. Drive – We get things done and we make a difference. If you have a disability and would prefer to apply in a different format or would like us to make reasonable adjustments to enable you to apply or attend an interview, please contact us at recruitment@greatbritishnuclear.uk and we will talk to you about how we can assist. Role Description The Power Platform / BI Engineer is a hands-on technical role responsible for designing, building, and maintaining high quality reporting, automation, and data solutions using the Microsoft Power Platform. This role underpins the organisation’s business intelligence and automation capabilities by developing robust, scalable workflows, structured data capture solutions, and performant reporting datasets. The Power Platform / BI Engineer provides the technical foundation, ensuring that data flows, datasets, semantic models, automations, and platforms are reliable, secure, and engineered to best practice standards. This role plays a crucial part in maturing GBE‑N’s digital and data capability, developing repeatable design patterns, strengthening governance, and accelerating reporting and insight delivery across the organisation. Key Responsibilities Power Platform & Reporting Solution Delivery - design and deliver end-to-end Power BI solutions, including optimised data models, DAX, and performance tuning. Build and operate Power Automate workflows for ingestion, validation, transformation, refresh cycles, notifications, and exception handling. Establish reusable templates and standards for reports, themes, flows, and SharePoint Online Lists to ensure consistent, scalable delivery. Data Integration & Architecture - integrate data from Excel, SharePoint, REST APIs, SQL sources, and systems such as P6, ensuring transformations are validated and documented. Maintain clear lineage, metadata, and mapping so technical change is traceable and reproducible. Governance, Quality & Platform Standards - apply Power Platform governance across environments, access, data classification, and solution lifecycle management. Implement CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices for Power BI and Power Platform solutions to ensure controlled deployments and versioning. Collaboration, Stakeholder Engagement & BI Team Delivery - work together with the Data Analyst to translate business needs into resilient technical solutions that enable accurate, meaningful reporting and automation. Participate in stakeholder conversations when needed to clarify feasibility, constraints, and design options. Document solutions clearly for handover and governance. Continuous Improvement & Innovation - evaluate new capabilities across Power BI, Power Automate, and emerging features (e.g., Fabric aligned patterns) and recommend pragmatic adoption paths. Identify repeatable patterns to reduce delivery time, improve quality, and replace manual processes with structured automation. Knowledge, Skills and Experience Required Technical Proficiency: β€’ Strong hands-on experience in Power BI development (data modelling, DAX, optimization, incremental refresh). β€’ Extensive experience building Power Automate flows with robust error handling and monitoring. β€’ Proficiency in SharePoint Online Lists, permissions models, and structured information design. β€’ Strong data handling skills including SQL, data shaping, validation, and working with inconsistent, real-world datasets. β€’ Experience implementing CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices for Power BI and Power Platform solutions. Strongly Desirable skills β€’ Experience consuming REST APIs (authentication, pagination, best practice patterns). β€’ Understanding of Power Platform governance frameworks and administrative controls. β€’ Familiarity with Microsoft Fabric or other pipeline/orchestration tools. β€’ Experience delivering solutions in fast-growing or immature data environments. β€’ Proven experience replacing manual Excel-based reporting β€’ Comfortable working without perfect data or complete spec Soft Skills: β€’ Strong problem-solving and analytical thinking. β€’ Effective communication and stakeholder engagement. β€’ Ability to work in cross-functional teams and adapt to evolving project needs. β€’ Ability to create clear, concise documentation for technical and non-technical audiences, ensuring smooth handover and compliance. β€’ Experience mentoring or leading Junior team members Sector Experience: β€’ Experience in energy, infrastructure, or government programs is highly desirable. β€’ Familiarity with nuclear program delivery, SMR technology, or regulated environments is a plus. Qualifications β€’ Bachelors or Masters degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field preferred. β€’ Professional certifications in related platforms are advantageous. β€’ Experience with Agile methodologies and DevOps practices is preferred.
