Role description
Job Overview The University of Minnesota Medical Center & Masonic Children’s Hospital is seeking two Quality Improvement Consultants to join the Performance Improvement & Clinical Quality team. As a member of the team, these positions will drive results-oriented performance improvement initiatives using the methodologies of Six Sigma and Lean while ensuring accountability, focus, strategic alignment and cross functional relationships with the other Fairview entities through the use of metrics-based goals and objectives. Please note there is the opportunity to receive training in improvement methodology in this role, and having or achieving certification is a requirement of the role. Employees who do not have certification will have 24 months from hire date to achieve certification at the level required for their role. • One of these positions will support the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) while the other will be assigned to Perioperative Services (Periop). However, QI Consultants can be assigned to other areas as the organization’s needs change. • Important note: This posting covers three possible hiring levels for the QICs: Associate QIC, QIC, and Senior QIC. The level suitable for the candidate’s experience and qualifications will be determined at the time an offer is made. Job Description • Lead and facilitate multiple process improvement project teams simultaneously utilizing improvement methodology (e.g. Lean Six Sigma) for UMMC and MCH • Takes initiative to develop transformative solutions to intractable problems • Serve as internal expert on process improvement tools and techniques with a focus on Lean Six Sigma • Applying an analytical/quantitative approach to problem solving by obtaining and using data and statistical concepts • Develops and maintains a strong working relationships with champions, sponsors, process owners and team members to become a trusted advisor • Facilitates a boundary-less approach to problem solving - effectively eliminating silos • Inspires and guides teams to achieve goals • Assists in the delivery of formal training courses of Lean Six Sigma • Coaches and mentors other improvement consultants & project team members, providing support and ongoing learning • Communicates clearly and effectively • Leading and facilitating multiple process improvement project teams simultaneously in the implementation of Lean Six Sigma for UMMC and UMCH • Works with Director, team, and site leadership to develop project ideas that will have significant impacts on strategic priorities • Effectively align and scope projects - Define the goal for improvement, the defects or waste to be eliminated or improved and identify team members • Ensures the development of necessary metrics and tracking systems to allow for active monitoring of project success • Manages resources to accomplish goals • Organizes work to set priorities and manage multiple and competing demands • Develops project management plans by breaking down work into process steps, schedules and accountabilities • Assist in the expansion of the education and training of Lean Six Sigma in the organization • Assists in the delivery of formal training courses for UMMC leaders, managers and process improvement teams around Lean Six Sigma • Coaching/mentoring Green and Black Belts on Lean Six Sigma methodologies • Act as both a technical and cultural change agent - serving as a process and organizational catalyst for change • Utilize change management tools to accelerate and ensure acceptance of the changes • Keeps focus on lasting change • Anticipates problems and plans accordingly • Breaks down barriers to achieve objectives Requirements • Education: Bachelor’s degree. • Experience: Minimum 1 year in Quality/Performance Improvement or equivalent clinical experience. • Skills: • Strong relational qualities (active listening, clear communication, relationship building). • Proficiency in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio, Project, SharePoint, OneNote). • Certification: Lean Six Sigma Green Belt (or equivalent) OR willingness to certify within 2 years. Advanced/Preferred • Education: Master’s degree preferred. • Experience: • 7-9 years leading improvement initiatives, preferably in healthcare. • Experience developing/deploying quality and safety program infrastructure. • Skilled in facilitating multi-disciplinary groups through change. • Technical Skills: • Advanced analytical skills (qualitative & quantitative data analysis, sustainable measurement systems). • Familiarity with statistical tools (Minitab), data visualization (PowerBI, Tableau, R), and healthcare platforms (EPIC, Strata). • Certification: Lean Six Sigma Black Belt (or equivalent) OR willingness to pursue within 2 years. Expert/Leadership • Demonstrated ability to: • Partner with operational leaders on strategic improvement work. • Lead comprehensive quality and safety programs. • Drive organizational change and sustain improvements. • Acute care QI/PI or clinical experience highly preferred.
