Role description
The Digital Applications organization at a large, regulated energy generation company is modernizing how non-outage nuclear work is planned, prioritized, and executed across its nuclear fleet. As part of a ‘Nuclear Online Work Management’ implementation, the organization is moving away from a rigid, 28-week waterfall scheduling model toward a more iterative, perpetual work execution approach, continuously evaluating work readiness based on parts availability, system readiness, and operational priorities. The Principal Data Solution Architect will play a critical role in designing and governing the data architectures that enable this transformation. This role is responsible for building scalable, secure, and high-performance data solutions that integrate data across multiple systems and nuclear sites.
By leveraging modern cloud-based data platforms, this architect will ensure that operational, planning, and execution data is accessible, consistent, and trusted to support both real-time decision-making and long-term strategic insight. This individual will work closely with IT, business, and operational stakeholders to translate complex nuclear work management requirements into robust data architectures, while also contributing to the evolution of the enterprise data strategy within a highly regulated environment.
Requirements:
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Science, or a related field.
• 10+ years of overall IT experience, with at least 5 years in data architecture, data engineering, or a similar role.
• Proven experience designing and delivering large-scale, enterprise data solutions.
• Hands-on experience with Microsoft Azure data services, including Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse Analytics, Azure Databricks, and related components.
• Extensive expertise in data architecture, data modeling, ETL/ELT pipelines, data lakes, and business intelligence solutions.
• Strong experience with Big Data technologies (e.g., Spark, Kafka, Hadoop) and both relational and NoSQL databases (e.g., SQL Server, MongoDB).
• Deep understanding of enterprise data concepts, including Data Lake, Data Mart, Data Hub, and Data Mesh architectures.
• Proficiency in OLTP and OLAP data modeling and familiarity with data formats such as Avro and Parquet.
• Ability to define enterprise-level data standards and contribute to data platform and tool selection.
• Solid understanding of data governance, data security best practices, and cybersecurity fundamentals in cloud-based environments.
• Experience with data profiling, data cataloging, and maintaining disciplined, up-to-date data dictionaries.
• Hands-on experience with data modeling tools such as Erwin, Power Designer, or similar platforms.
• Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams and collaborate with senior leadership on data strategy.
• Excellent communication, consulting, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to influence both technical and business stakeholders.
Bonus Requirements:
• Master’s degree.
• Formal IT Architecture training or certification.
• Experience supporting mission-critical or regulated operational environments (energy, utilities, industrial, or similar).
• Familiarity with data privacy and regulatory requirements (e.g., GDPR, CCPA) and secure data handling practices.
• Expertise optimizing Azure data platforms for performance, scalability, and cost efficiency.
• Experience with Azure Machine Learning or analytics-driven architectures is a plus.
Your Responsibilities Include:
• Design and implement scalable data architectures (conceptual, logical, and physical) that support Nuclear Online Work Management and enterprise data-driven decision-making.
• Lead the development and optimization of data pipelines, data lakes, and data warehousing solutions to ensure accuracy, consistency, and availability of work management data.
• Integrate data from multiple operational and enterprise systems to enable iterative, near-real-time prioritization and execution of non-outage nuclear work.
• Collaborate with business and IT stakeholders to translate functional and non-functional requirements into comprehensive, secure, and scalable data solutions.
• Establish and enforce data governance standards, ensuring data quality, lineage, security, and compliance with regulatory and industry best practices.
• Define enterprise-level data standards, models, and integration patterns aligned with the broader technology roadmap.
• Stay current on emerging data technologies and trends, recommending innovative solutions to enhance operational insight and performance.
• Mentor and guide cross-functional teams in the design and implementation of data platforms and analytics solutions.
• Continuously assess and optimize existing data systems to improve performance, scalability, reliability, and cost efficiency.
• Communicate data strategies and complex architectural concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, including leadership.
• Promote a data-driven culture by educating stakeholders on data management best practices and the effective use of analytics and reporting tools.
What’s in it for you?
• A welcoming and collaborative team environment where your work will play a foundational role in how the business discovers and engages with Nuclear Online Work Management initiatives across a major provider of carbon-free energy.
• Health, Dental, and Vision benefits, weekly pay, holiday paid time off, and sick leave.
• Equal employment opportunities (EEO) to all employees and applicants for employment without regard to race, color, religion, national origin, age, sex, citizenship, disability, genetic information, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, marital status, amnesty, or status as a covered veteran in accordance with applicable federal, state, and local laws.
