Job#: 3037712 Job Description: Senior Data Engineer - Kusto / KQL & Telemetry Analytics Location: Redmond, Washington (Onsite) Employment Type: Contract Role Description: Senior Data Engineer responsible for the aggregation of large-scale data, the design and productionization of analytical logic, and the development of pipelines that meet SLAs for business intelligence and executive reporting. Owns end-to-end delivery of data products, from raw source through aggregation, modeling, and dashboard-ready outputs, and partners closely with engineering and analytics consumers to ensure correctness, performance, and reliability at scale. This is a hands-on technical role with delivery accountability. The engineer will write production code, design schemas, optimize query performance, build and operate scheduled pipelines, and serve as a technical peer to client-side engineering stakeholders. Role Requirements: Technical foundation across the core data engineering toolset: Strong SQL and query optimization fundamentals Production experience with Azure Data Explorer (Kusto) and KQL Time-series and event-data modeling, including deduplication, distinct-count, and rolling-window patterns Schema design for aggregation tables and dashboard-serving warm tiers Pipeline orchestration (Azure Logic Apps, Microsoft Fabric, Azure Data Factory, or equivalent) CI/CD discipline in Azure DevOps and Git/GitHub (branching, pull requests, preview deployments) Working familiarity with TypeScript / Next.js (React) sufficient to align data outputs with custom dashboard consumers Documentation-first engineering practice (README, in-repo design notes, code review discipline) Experience: 8+ years of data engineering experience overall 5+ years hands-on production experience with Microsoft Kusto / KQL on high-volume, high-cardinality workloads Demonstrable data science / analytical modeling background, comfort with distinct-count accuracy tradeoffs (HLL sketches), cohort analytics, slowly-changing dimensions, and statistical correctness in time-series aggregations Prior delivery in enterprise or client-facing environments with senior engineering stakeholders Proven track record meeting BI/analytics SLAs at scale (latency, freshness, reliability) Not a fit: Generalist Azure data engineers whose primary background is Power BI, Synapse SQL, or ADF pipelines without deep KQL depth. This role requires Kusto as a primary, daily tool - not a secondary skill. Example of the Work: Building advanced KQL queries against high-volume telemetry to produce accurate metrics based on unique identifiers, and designing the underlying schema and aggregation tables to power the visual representations required by engineering and leadership consumers. Productionizing those queries as scheduled, monitored pipelines that meet daily SLAs and feed downstream dashboards.
