Senior Data Engineer – Contract (Outside IR35)
📍 Remote (max 1 day a month in Central London)
💰 Up to £600/day Outside IR35
📅 ASAP start – initial contract 7 months (extension likely)
⏳ Short notice preferred (1 week ideal)
We’re looking for an experienced Senior Data Engineer to support a large-scale central government programme. You’ll be joining a delivery team responsible for migrating legacy on-premise and cloud data assets into modern cloud-based analytics and storage platforms, working closely with data analysts, business analysts and platform teams.
Key Responsibilities
• Conduct detailed analysis of existing data assets across legacy on-premise and cloud environments
• Document current-state data flows, structures, dependencies, and data quality characteristics
• Produce data catalogues and profiling outputs to inform migration and replatforming design
• Support mapping of legacy data to new cloud-based data platforms
• Build and maintain ELT/data pipelines in line with agreed designs
• Connect migration tooling to source systems and ingest data into target platforms
• Resolve platform and data issues identified during testing
• Support cutover and early-life support (ELS) activities
Essential Skills & Experience
• Strong hands-on experience as a Data Engineer on large-scale migration programmes
• Palantir Foundry experience highly desirable (ingestion, transformations, data loading)
• Advanced SQL and experience working with large, interconnected datasets
• Proficiency in Python
• Ability to understand and interpret R scripts (coding not required)
• Experience designing and building ELT pipelines
• Proven background migrating data from on-prem to cloud environments
• Strong data management, quality and cleansing expertise
• Excellent data forensic and analytical skills
• Experience supporting dashboards, pipelines, and related data services
• Previous experience working within central government or highly regulated environments
• Familiarity with complex health, public sector or enterprise-scale data governance frameworks
