Role description
Senior Data Migration Engineer
Our client is looking for a Senior Data Migration Engineer to support a large-scale cloud and data migration assessment programme.
Working closely with the Lead Cloud & Data Architect, this role will focus on hands-on technical discovery, environment analysis, and operational assessment across complex infrastructure and application estates. The successful candidate will help ground the assessment in real-world system configurations, dependencies, and operational realities while contributing to migration planning and technical validation activities.
Responsibilities
• Execute technical discovery activities across infrastructure, databases, applications, and integrations using inventory tooling, configuration exports, and targeted system analysis.
• Perform detailed assessments of database, application, operating system, and infrastructure configurations to identify constraints, customizations, dependencies, and operational challenges.
• Document current-state “as-built” views of key systems including topology diagrams, data flows, scheduling processes, integrations, and workload dependencies.
• Support migration planning by identifying operational and technical risks such as undocumented processes, manual interventions, access limitations, fragile integrations, and unsupported components.
• Conduct targeted prototyping and dry-run migration exercises where appropriate, including lift-and-shift testing of representative non-critical workloads to validate migration assumptions.
• Assist in defining migration runbooks, operational checklists, and technical execution processes that will be used during future migration waves.
• Collaborate closely with architects, infrastructure teams, and client stakeholders to validate findings and ensure technical accuracy across the assessment.
• Support the preparation of final assessment deliverables by providing technical evidence, detailed findings, configuration analysis, and implementation considerations.
Requirements
• 6–8+ years of experience in senior engineering roles focused on database, infrastructure, cloud, or migration engineering.
• Strong hands-on expertise with SQL Server, Windows Server, Linux environments, and Microsoft Azure workloads.
• Comfortable working directly with logs, scripts, configurations, infrastructure tooling, and system-level diagnostics.
• Experience supporting cloud migration, infrastructure modernization, or large-scale transformation initiatives.
• Strong understanding of infrastructure dependencies, operational processes, integrations, and enterprise application environments.
• Ability to translate technical findings into structured, client-friendly documentation and assessment outputs.
• Strong collaboration and communication skills with the ability to work effectively alongside architects, engineers, and client stakeholders.
• Experience within regulated, enterprise, or public sector environments is highly desirable.
