Senior MS Access Database Developer
Location: Remote
Overview
We are seeking a Senior MS Access Database Developer to stabilize, enhance, and modernize mission-critical Access applications supporting lending, risk, and regulatory reporting. This role combines deep legacy system expertise with a forward-looking mindset to help refactor and migrate solutions to enterprise data platforms. Youβll work in a high-visibility, regulated environment where data accuracy, auditability, and business continuity are critical.
Key Responsibilities
β’ Design, develop, and maintain complex MS Access applications, including front-end/back-end split architectures
β’ Optimize VBA code, SQL queries, forms, and reports for performance, usability, and stability
β’ Analyze, reverse-engineer, and refactor legacy Access systems supporting risk, underwriting, and regulatory workflows
β’ Integrate Access applications with enterprise data platforms (DB2, SQL Server, Snowflake) via ODBC/OLE DB
β’ Identify critical data elements, business logic, and data lineage within existing applications
β’ Partner with stakeholders across Risk, Finance, and Underwriting to translate business needs into technical solutions
β’ Support data validation, reconciliation, and audit processes for regulatory reporting
β’ Create and maintain technical documentation including data models, process flows, and transformation logic
β’ Collaborate with data engineering teams to migrate Access-based workflows to modern platforms (e.g., Snowflake, dbt)
β’ Ensure compliance with data governance, security, and regulatory requirements
Required Qualifications
β’ 5+ years of hands-on Microsoft Access development experience
β’ Strong expertise in:
β’ VBA programming (including Windows API usage)
β’ Advanced SQL (complex joins, aggregations, performance tuning)
β’ Access forms, reports, macros, and linked tables
β’ Experience managing Access upgrades and full application lifecycle
Must-Have Experience
β’ Senior Access Development: Proven experience building and maintaining complex Access environments
β’ Legacy System Stabilization & Refactoring: Ability to clean up and optimize large, fragile systems without disrupting critical workflows
β’ Access Upgrades & 32/64-bit Conversions: Experience with version migrations, PtrSafe/API updates, and resolving broken dependencies
β’ Enterprise Data Integration: Hands-on experience integrating Access with DB2, SQL Server, Snowflake, or similar systems
β’ Regulated Environment Experience: Background in banking, finance, or similar industries with strong audit and compliance requirements
Additional Qualifications
β’ Strong understanding of relational data modeling and normalization
β’ Experience working with large, complex legacy systems
β’ Expertise in code analysis, reverse engineering, and technical documentation
β’ Ability to communicate effectively with both technical and business stakeholders
