Subject Matter Expert (SME) – Data Governance (Applied Data Science) About Curio Faculty Curio, a leading education consulting and learning experience company, works with universities, vocational education providers, schools and companies to drive change through learning. Objectives of the Role The Subject Matter Expert (SME) will play a critical role in developing engaging, relevant, and high-quality online learning experiences for a Data Governance module within an Applied Data Science degree for a leading UK-based university. Working closely with Learning Experience Designers, Developers, and academic stakeholders, the SME will provide expert subject content aligned with learning outcomes, curriculum requirements, and real-world applications. Work Committment • Up to 200 hours of work in total, compensated at £45-50 per hour. • Candidate must be based in the UK. • This is a fully remote, contract-based SME role. Course Context This module introduces students to key methods of analysis in data science, with a specific focus on data governance including ethics, privacy, regulations, and policy. Students will understand the data lifecycle, challenges in data quality, and apply problem-solving skills to communicate insights effectively, aligned with recognized Qualifications Frameworks. Key Responsibilities • Curriculum Planning: Participate in workshops to map course architecture, assessment strategy, and the structure of individual learning activities. • Stakeholder Collaboration: Work closely with clients, partners, and industry stakeholders to align course content with practical and academic insights. • Learning Design Support: Collaborate with Learning Designers to co-develop authentic learning activities and assessments that reflect real-world challenges in data governance. • Content Development: Write and structure course content based on a pre-approved course map, ensuring academic accuracy and appropriate referencing. • Assessment Design: Create assessment tasks and rubrics in collaboration with Learning Designers and client/partner academic leads, including development of supporting materials such as case studies or data sets. • Media Planning: Support the creation of bespoke multimedia content by drafting scripts, prompts, or outlines as needed. • Resource Coordination: Liaise with university librarians to source and clear course materials; coordinate with graphic designers to develop course imagery. • Content Sourcing: Identify and integrate contemporary, relevant learning resources to enhance course content. • Quality Assurance: Review all course components from a subject matter perspective to ensure academic quality and relevance. • Feedback Implementation: Incorporate feedback from clients and partners throughout the development process to ensure content meets project expectations. Skills & Qualifications • Master’s or Ph.D. in Data Science, Information Management, Computer Science, or a related discipline. • Experience teaching or designing content for tertiary-level data governance, data management, or applied data science programs. • Strong industry or professional experience in data governance, including regulatory and ethical frameworks. • Proven curriculum design and digital course development experience. • Familiarity with learning management systems and online education best practices. • Ability to write for diverse learner profiles with a focus on engagement and clarity. • Excellent communication and collaboration skills with cross-functional teams including designers, developers, and academic stakeholders. • Solutions-oriented, self-motivated, and responsive to feedback. • Confidence in leading workshops and contributing to collaborative design processes. Additional Information • Subject Matter Expert (SME) roles with Curio Faculty are fully remote and offered on a contract basis. • Contractors based in Australia are required to hold a valid Australian Business Number (ABN) or Australian Company Number (ACN). • A current Working with Children Check may be required, depending on the client or partner’s requirements. • All successful candidates must complete reference checks and qualification verification prior to engagement.
