Role description
Job Title: Systems Operations & Modernization Engineer
Location: Remote (Preference: West Coast / Washington State)
Duration: Contract (Up to 12 Months)
Type: Contingent / Contract
Overview
We are seeking a Systems Operations & Modernization Engineer to support a portfolio of mission-critical, flight-safety-related systems within an Airspace Efficiency Services environment.
This role is responsible for both:
β’ Stabilizing and operating existing systems, including legacy platforms
β’ Driving modernization efforts, transitioning legacy applications to cloud-based and SaaS solutions
This is a highly impactful role supporting real-time aviation services where reliability, performance, and risk reduction are critical

Key Responsibilities
1. Systems Ownership & Operations
β’ Own day-to-day operations of mission-critical applications and workflows
β’ Ensure high availability, performance, and rapid issue resolution
β’ Support time-sensitive, flight-safety-related data processing and delivery systems
β’ Manage customer-facing portals, user access, and data workflows
β’ Maintain automation pipelines for data ingestion, processing, and storage
1. Infrastructure & Integrations
β’ Manage integrations including SFTP, email feeds, and alerting systems
β’ Configure and support infrastructure components:
β’ Virtual machines, file shares, storage
β’ Firewalls, app gateways, SSL certificates
β’ Maintain secure and compliant environments (e.g., cipher updates, access controls)
1. Modernization & Transformation
β’ Assess legacy systems (primarily HCL Domino) and document dependencies
β’ Design and execute migration strategies to:
β’ Azure services
β’ SaaS platforms
β’ Modern enterprise tools
β’ Lead phased modernization with minimal operational disruption
β’ Implement improved data pipelines and integration patterns
1. Documentation & Knowledge Transfer
β’ Create technical documentation, runbooks, and migration playbooks
β’ Train internal teams to support modernized systems post-engagement
Required Qualifications
Core Technical Skills
β’ Strong experience with HCL Domino (v8+):
β’ Application & database development
β’ LotusScript, Formula Language, Domino Object Model
β’ xPages, web technologies, and security models (ACLs, Authors/Readers)
Automation & Development
β’ Proficiency in:
β’ Python and C# (mid-level)
β’ Basic PowerShell and JavaScript
β’ Experience with:
β’ Web scraping, XML data handling
β’ Task automation (e.g., Windows Task Scheduler)
Infrastructure & Cloud
β’ Experience with:
β’ Windows-based infrastructure (VMs, hosting, backups)
β’ Networking and security (firewalls, gateways, SFTP, SSL)
β’ Working knowledge of Azure with ability to troubleshoot and self-learn
Tools
β’ Familiarity with text/code comparison tools (e.g., Notepad++)
Preferred Qualifications
β’ Background in aviation or aerospace environments
β’ Experience working with:
β’ NOTAMs, flight data, or aviation forecasting systems
β’ Prior roles such as:
β’ Pilot, air traffic control, flight operations, avionics, or similar
