Role description
Job Title: Taxonomist (Ecommerce & Retail) - Remote
12 Month FTC - Leading to Permanent Position
Overview
We are seeking an experienced Taxonomist with a strong background in Ecommerce, Product Information Management (PIM), and the retail sector. You will play a key role in structuring and optimising product data across our digital ecosystem, with our current PIM platform Akeneo at the centre of daily operations.
This is a fully remote position.
Key Responsibilities Taxonomy & Classification Design
• Develop, maintain, and evolve comprehensive product taxonomies, hierarchies, attribute models, and metadata frameworks for ecommerce environments.
• Ensure taxonomy structures support scalability, localisation, and category growth.
• Collaborate with product, merchandising, and UX teams to align taxonomy with business goals and customer journeys. PIM Implementation & Data Structuring (Akeneo)
• Work extensively within Akeneo, which is the PIM currently in use, to optimise taxonomy, attributes, product schemas, and data governance rules.
• Maintain and refine product attribute sets, validation rules, and classification logic inside Akeneo.
• Support ongoing enhancements, system improvements, data flows, and integrations related to Akeneo.
• Diagnose and resolve taxonomy- and data-quality issues originating from the PIM. Cross-Functional Collaboration
• Partner with merchandising, digital experience, SEO, engineering, and catalogue/content teams to ensure taxonomy effectively supports both operational needs and customer-facing experiences.
• Advise teams on best practices for categorisation, naming standards, and attribute usage.
• Lead taxonomy- and PIM-related training sessions for cross-functional stakeholders. Data Quality & Governance
• Establish and manage data governance processes to ensure consistency, accuracy, and compliance across product data.
• Conduct regular audits to identify misclassifications, gaps, or attribute inconsistencies.
• Work with analytics teams to track how taxonomy impacts product discovery, search relevancy, and customer conversion. Required Skills & Experience
• 3-5+ years' experience in taxonomy, product data management, information architecture, catalogue management, or a similar domain.
• Strong background in Ecommerce and the retail product landscape.
• Hands-on experience with PIM solutions (e.g., Akeneo, inRiver, Salsify, Pimberly, Stibo STEP, etc.).
• Experience designing and managing scalable product hierarchies and complex data structures.
• Strong understanding of how taxonomy influences navigation, search, SEO, and conversion.
• Excellent communication and documentation skills, able to convey complex structures clearly.
• Highly analytical, detail-oriented, and passionate about data organisation and optimisation. Preferred Qualifications
• Experience with other PIM platforms (e.g., inRiver, Salsify, Stibo STEP, Pimberly) in addition to Akeneo.
• Familiarity with ecommerce search/merchandising technologies (Algolia, Bloomreach, Elasticsearch, etc.).
• Understanding of GS1/GTIN standards and retail industry classification models.
• Background in UX, information architecture, or content strategy.
• Experience working with omnichannel retail data environments.
• Knowledge of data modelling, automation tools, or scripting to support taxonomy scaling. What We Offer
• Fully remote and flexible working environment.
• A key role in shaping product data and taxonomy foundations across digital channels.
• Collaborative, people-first team culture with strong cross-functional exposure.
