Role description
About Database Tycoon
Database Tycoon is a modern data consultancy that helps teams take control of their data with clarity and confidence. We work with growing companies, nonprofits, and mission-driven organizations that need clean, reliable, analytics-ready information. We lead with open-source tools, clear communication, and systems that teams can understand and maintain long after we’re out of the picture.
About the Role
We’re looking for a US based Analytics Engineer who is motivated by turning complex, multi-source data into durable, well-structured models.. Someone who enjoys structure, simplicity, and genuinely partnering with clients. This is a contract role (15–30 hrs/week), and hours may vary based on clients needs and mutual agreement.
What You’ll Do on the Day to Day
• Build and maintain accessible, well-organized analytics-ready data models
• Refactor and develop ELT workflows (dbt, SQLMesh, or similar)
• Improve data quality, consistency, and reliability
• Prepare business-ready datasets that power analytics and decision-making
• Work directly with client stakeholders to understand needs and guide sustainable, thoughtful data decisions
• Contribute to architectural decisions and long-term ecosystem planning
• Document clearly so teams stay confident, informed, and self-sufficient
Projects You Might Work On
You’ll work on a variety of projects that reflect how we show up as a modern, open-source-minded consultancy. Some days that means untangling and rebuilding legacy dbt models so teams can understand and trust their data again. Other days you’ll be standardizing core SaaS, revenue, and operational metrics so everyone teams are aligned around consistent, shared definitions of what’s happening in the business. You’ll help nonprofits and mission-driven orgs create reliable reporting sources of truth that make their work easier and more impactful. You’ll design simple, scalable models that power dashboards. You may also participate in new implementations and discovery phases, learning new technologies, getting to know a client’s world, and helping to sketch out what their ideal data setup should look like. And for our long-term clients, you’ll help keep things evolving: iterating on logic, improving performance, and updating models as needs evolve.
What Makes You a Strong Candidate
• Meaningful experience in analytics engineering, data modeling, and adjacent roles
• Proficiency with SQL, dbt, SQLMesh, or similar ELT frameworks
• Familiarity with modern warehouses (Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift, MotherDuck)
• Thoughtful approach to documentation, testing, and version control
• Ability to explain technical choices clearly, accessibly, and in a way that builds understanding
• Collaborative, curious, and motivated to do work that meaningfully supports teams and communities
• We encourage candidates from historically underrepresented communities to apply—even if you aren’t sure you meet every qualification.
Why You Might Like Working With Us
• We’re remote-first and offer flexibility in how work hours are arranged
• You’ll get exposure to a wide range of tools, clients, and problems
• We prioritize a supportive, transparent, and collaborative working culture
• Our clients truly appreciate thoughtful, reliable data work
