Role description
Associate Scientific Informatics Consultant Involve Data | Remote (US) | Independent Contractor (1099) About Involve Data Involve Data is a premier data and digital accelerator for life sciences and venture capital companies. Our team of industry executives, technology and data experts, and change managers brings decades of experience driving technology strategy and delivering impactful outcomes. We help biotech and life sciences clients modernize the way they manage scientific data, laboratory systems, and research workflows, combining hands-on technical capability with a deep understanding of scientific operations. Through trusted relationships across the industry, we deliver rapid value creation with immediate results while building for the future, and bring people along on the journey to select the right-sized change approach for lasting digital excellence. Our clients include major biotech companies and emerging startups backed by leading life science investors. About This Role This is a flexible 1099 consulting engagement with the potential to transition into a longer-term or full-time role based on business needs and performance. Hours may vary depending on client project demand, though we aim to provide consistent engagement opportunities. This is not a traditional consulting position. We are looking for scientists with strong bench experience who want to transition into building technical solutions for scientists. You’ll work directly with client research teams to understand their scientific workflows, then help shape the data systems, configurations, and automation that support modern research operations. This includes configuring scientific software platforms, participating in data modeling discussions, and collaborating with engineers and senior consultants on instrument and system integrations. You do not need to be a software engineer. We expect to train the right candidate on informatics platforms, consulting delivery, and AI-assisted development tools. Any prior experience with scripting, automation, or informatics platforms is a plus but not required. What you bring is harder to teach: deep understanding of how science actually gets done, what data matters, and why systems sometimes fail scientists. This role is client-facing. You'll be on calls and, at times, in person with research teams, translating their needs into solutions and explaining technical approaches in terms that make sense. You'll need to be comfortable with ambiguity, quick to learn new domains, and driven to deliver work you're proud of. You’ll work alongside a small, senior consulting team. Expected travel is typically low but may vary based on client engagement needs. What You'll Do • Partner with biotech clients to understand their scientific workflows, data requirements, and pain points • Map laboratory processes into data models and system configurations with guidance from senior consultants • Participate in system architecture and workflow discussions with engineers and senior consultants • Build automation scripts and lightweight tools that improve scientific data workflows • Configure and implement laboratory information management systems, with a focus on Benchling and CDD Vault • Collaborate with our technical team on integrations between laboratory instruments, software systems, and data platforms • Use AI-assisted development tools to build scripts, automation, and custom solutions • Document solutions clearly and train client teams on new systems What We're Looking For Required • 3+ years of hands-on experience in a research life science laboratory (academic or industry) • Direct experience generating, analyzing, and managing biology or chemistry experimental data • Familiarity with common assay types and laboratory instrumentation • Scientific background in drug discovery-relevant disciplines such as molecular biology, biochemistry, protein science, or cell biology • Excellent written and verbal communication skills • Comfort working directly with clients and external stakeholders • Ability to learn quickly and work effectively with ambiguity • Self-directed and motivated to continuously learn new scientific and technical domains Preferred • Exposure to LIMS, ELN, or other laboratory software systems (e.g. Benchling) • Experience working at the interface of wet lab and computational teams • Experience with scripting or data analysis (Python, R, or similar) • You've been the person who wrote a script to solve your own data problem, proposed a process improvement, or became the informal "data person" in your group Engagement Details • Opportunity to apply your science background to informatics and technical consulting engagements for biotech clients • Exposure to AI-assisted development tools, Python, data modeling, and technical implementation work across client engagements • Designed for scientists interested in transitioning into scientific informatics, laboratory systems, and AI-enabled data consulting within biotech • Contract engagement with the potential for extension or future conversion to a permanent role, depending on business needs and performance • Exposure to a wide range of biotech companies and scientific domains • Remote work with a small, experienced team • This is an independent contractor engagement and does not include employee benefits or bonus eligibility To Apply Apply via LinkedIn or email your resume and a brief note about why this interests you to careers@involvedata.com. Bonus points if you include an example of something you built or improved in your research environment (a script, automation, spreadsheet workflow, analysis pipeline, or process improvement). Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.
