Job Description
CBTS is searching for a Senior MS Access Database Developer to support and modernize critical desktop-based data applications used for commercial lending, underwriting, and regulatory reporting. This role will focus on maintaining legacy Access solutions while driving refactoring, optimization, and migration toward scalable enterprise data platforms.
Key Responsibilities:
• Migrate and stand up databases (Access → updated environments)
• Upgrade and enhance existing MS Access applications
• Lead architecture and lifecycle management of Access solutions
• Ensure applications are optimized, secure, and fully functional post-migration
• Design, develop, and maintain complex MS Access databases (front-end/back-end split architectures).
• Optimize VBA code, queries, forms, and reports for performance and usability.
• Analyze and refactor legacy Access applications used in risk, regulatory, and lending workflows.
• Integrate Access applications with enterprise data sources (DB2, SQL Server, Snowflake) using ODBC/OLE DB.
• Reverse-engineer existing solutions to identify:
• Critical data elements
• Business logic
• Data lineage and dependencies
• Collaborate with business stakeholders (Risk, Finance, Underwriting) to translate requirements into technical solutions.
• Support data validation, reconciliation, and audit processes required for regulatory reporting.
• Develop documentation including:
• Data models
• Process flows
• Transformation logic
• Partner with data engineering teams to migrate Access-based solutions to modern platforms (e.g., Snowflake, dbt).
• Ensure compliance with data governance, security, and control frameworks.
Requirements:
• 5+ years of MS Access development
• Strong VBA (including Windows API usage)
• Advanced SQL (joins, aggregations, performance tuning)
• Experience with Access forms, reports, macros, and linked tables
• Proven experience with Access upgrades, including:
• Cross-version migrations
• 32-bit to 64-bit conversions (PtrSafe, API declarations, ActiveX)
• Fixing broken references / deprecated components
• Regression testing post-upgrade
• ETL experience (Access → PostgreSQL or Oracle)
• PostgreSQL exposure
• Deep, hands-on MS Access background (not just exposure)
• Experience building and managing Access databases end-to-end
• Ability to understand business applications and lead modernization efforts
• Strong SQL and security understanding
• Experience working with large, complex legacy systems
• Strong knowledge of relational data modeling and normalization
• Hands-on experience integrating Access with enterprise databases (DB2, SQL Server, Snowflake, or similar)
• Proven ability in code analysis, reverse engineering, and documentation
• Experience working in regulated environments (banking, finance, insurance)
• Strong stakeholder communication and business analysis skills
What Good Looks Like:
• Can stabilize messy Access ecosystems quickly
• Thinks in terms of data flows and data products, not just tools
• Balances short-term fixes vs long-term modernization
• Comfortable dealing with tribal knowledge gaps
• Strong ownership mindset in high-risk, high-visibility environments
