Backend Engineer

Title: Backend Engineer – Data Platform / Analytics Applications Location : Rockville, MD or McLean, VA Target Start Date : ASAP Type: contract Pay Rate: DOE This opportunity sits within a mission-driven environment focused on protecting the integrity of U.S. financial markets. The team is building analyst-facing tools that transform large-scale market data into intuitive, usable applications. It is a strong fit for engineers who enjoy working across both front-end and back-end systems, especially in data-intensive environments. What You'll Do • Build applications that help business users and analysts work more effectively • Design and develop scalable multi-tier web applications • Create and enhance back-end services and APIs that integrate with existing platforms • Partner with product and engineering teams to deliver high-quality solutions • Support releases through the full engineering lifecycle into production • Contribute to architecture, engineering standards, and development best practices Required Qualifications • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field • 5+ years of experience building production-grade web-based applications • Strong back-end development experience in Java with Spring, Python with Django/Flask/FastAPI, or Scala • Experience building and integrating RESTful web services • Front-end integration experience with modern JavaScript frameworks, especially Angular • Experience building data platform, analytics, or data-heavy web applications • Strong SQL skills, including writing and analyzing complex queries in large-scale data environments • Experience with AWS services and working within cloud-based architectures • Familiarity with Agile/Scrum and CI/CD development practices • Experience writing automated unit, component, and integration tests • Ability to adapt in fast-changing environments with evolving priorities Nice to Have • Experience with machine learning–enabled data pipelines • Hands-on exposure to big data technologies such as Spark, Kafka, Flink, or similar • Familiarity with Airflow or related orchestration tools • Experience using AI-assisted development tools to improve speed and quality across the SDLC What Stands Out in This Role • Full stack role with emphasis on backend services, data-heavy systems, and analyst-facing tools • Strong fit for someone with Angular on the front end and Java or Python on the back end • Big data and cloud exposure are important, especially SQL at scale and AWS • Nice blend of platform engineering and user-facing application development • AI is a plus, but not the core of the role Ideal Candidate Profile A strong candidate will likely come from a background building internal analytics platforms, data applications, or large-scale enterprise tools.
