Role description
Position Summary
The Bedside Medical Device Integration (BMDI) Engineer is responsible for the design, implementation, optimization, and support of integrated medical device ecosystems that deliver real-time clinical data into the EHR. This role serves as a subject matter expert in device interoperability, middleware platforms, and Epic-integrated workflows, ensuring accurate, secure, and reliable data exchange at the point of care.
Key Responsibilities
β’ Lead the analysis, configuration, implementation, and support of middleware interfaces between bedside medical devices and the EHR, including Epic applications and associated interface engines.
β’ Support integration of devices such as anesthesia machines, physiological monitors, ventilators (BIPAP/CPAP), dialysis/CRRT systems, perfusion systems, cardiac output monitors, BIS monitors, and patient monitor gateways.
β’ Configure and optimize middleware platforms including Capsule Technologies and Excel Medical (Hillrom/Baxter), ensuring seamless data flow into Epic.
β’ Serve as subject matter expert for real-time and serial device integrations utilizing HL7 and related interoperability standards, including Epic Bridges interfaces.
β’ Analyze clinical workflows and translate business requirements into device integration and Epic interface specifications.
β’ Validate data accuracy, mapping, and integrity across devices, middleware, interface engines, and Epic through structured testing (unit, integration, regression, and high-risk scenarios).
β’ Support system upgrades, device deployments, Epic updates, and integration modifications while adhering to change control and PHI security standards.
β’ Provide secondary and tertiary production support for device connectivity and Epic integration issues; participate in 24x7/365 on-call rotation.
β’ Collaborate with Nursing, Biomedical Engineering, Clinical Informatics, IT Infrastructure, and vendors to ensure reliable device integration at the bedside.
Requirements:
β’ Strong Communicator and competence in both Clinical and technical subject matter delivery
β’ Robust organizational skills in verbal & written form, including presentations, report
β’ generation and accurate documentation
β’ Previous experience working with medical device EHR interfaces and performing the
β’ analysis of the clinical or ancillary department processes, workflows, and data requirements
β’ Experience with interface and data integration concepts that include common medical
β’ device integration communication standards and / or other industry-standard data exchange
β’ protocols such as HL7
β’ Medical Device / System configuration and / or administration experience.
β’ Ability to apply knowledge of information theory, computer science and / or engineering, and
β’ systems analysis to integrated operational systems for specific and complex medical device
β’ systems
Qualifications:
β’ Associateβs degree or technical institute degree/certificate or equivalent work experience
β’ required.
β’ 3-5 years of experience working in IT supporting Bedside Medical Device Integration.
β’ Experience working with project life cycle and project management methodologies required.
β’ 3+ years experience working in the healthcare/medical environment is preferred.
β’ Epic Bridges certification preferred.
β’ Hands on experience with Capsule Technologies or Excel Medical/Hillrom/Baxter Healthcare middleware
