Role description
Data/Business Intelligence (BI) Architect for DOL The Data/BI Architect designs and supports the federal government agency’s overall information reporting architecture across multiple data types, accounting for both structured and unstructured content balancing security, analytics, and performance requirements. Power BI is at the core of the agency’s reporting front end with some legacy reports being delivered by SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS). This position requires someone with extensive knowledge of not only creating reports, templates, etc., but someone that can assist DOL to meet its’ goals and to streamline and modernize the current reporting infrastructure. In addition to having knowledge of BI front end tools, designing back end SSAS Tabular and Power BI report models and the necessary ETL processes to populate those models from the data source is a required skillset. Expertise in DAX is required. The Data Architect oversees the flow of data model development including conceptual, logical and physical models, and must be capable of translating business data from wide variety of structured and unstructured resources into a usable enterprise information architecture, which may include data models, metadata schema, controlled vocabularies, ontologies and taxonomies. The Data Architect supports design of corresponding search engine for data retrieval and works with the team to perform source system analysis, identification of key data issues, and data profiling. The Data Architect provides a consultative approach with business users, asking questions to understand the business need and deriving the data flow, logical and physical data models based on those needs. This is an offsite role, local candidate is preferred. Experience/Qualifications: Undergraduate college degree from an accredited college or university in computer science, data science, information systems management, mathematics, or other discipline related to the requirements of this project, or equivalent experience. At least 8 years of experience with data modeling (conceptual, logical and physical model design) and large-scale data modeling for data warehouse environments. Extensive experience with working in a Power BI environment. Other data visualization tools such as Tableau will be considered in assessing qualifications, but the incumbent will be expected to be working in a Power BI environment. Extensive experience with BI including visualizations, datasets, reports, and dashboards. Working knowledge of database replication, migration, and design. Experience translating business data semantics into a logical model as well as providing technical direction to development teams. Experience with metadata, data architecture, data governance, and data quality. Experience using DAX expressions for the creation of complex queries for custom reporting. Extensive ETL skills, designing reporting models with an emphasis on SSAS, Power Pivot or Power BI Tabular models. DOL’s tabular models are primarily sourced from internal Oracle databases. Experience using MS SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS), MS SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS), and Legacy Reporting on Oracle. Extensive experience with structured query language PostgreSQL, SQL Server 2008 and above or Oracle SQL. Strong ability to analyze large data sets and the inter relationships between data. Experience with Agile SDLC desirable. Ability to diagnose and troubleshoot problems and perform research if required to aid in troubleshooting. Ability to gather business requirements, perform analysis and establish and recommend a data integration architecture that aligns information systems to the agency mission. Proven ability to work creatively and analytically in a teamwork-oriented environment Must have excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to work in both a business and IT space, as well as superior verbal and written communications skills. Experience with case management databases in a regulatory environment, law enforcement or public agency desirable. Experience securing data to FISMA moderate level of security at a minimum. Recent successful performance of the above duties on a similar project. Pay: $100.00 - $130.00 per hour Expected hours: 40.0 per week Work Location: Remote
