Role description
The SSRS Report Conversion Specialist is responsible for converting existing Crystal Reports into fully equivalent SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) reports within an enterprise reporting environment. This role requires precise replication of data logic, layout, parameters, calculations, groupings, and output formats to ensure continuity of reporting operations, auditability, and long‑term maintainability. The specialist collaborates closely with business stakeholders, IT teams, and project leadership to deliver high‑quality, validated reporting outputs.
Primary Responsibilities
Report Assessment & Requirements Review
Analyze existing Crystal Reports, including underlying logic, dataset structures, parameters, grouping rules, formatting, and export configurations.
Identify constraints, risks, assumptions, and technical dependencies that may influence conversion activities.
Confirm report inventory and provide clarification summaries or follow‑up questions needed before finalizing development tasks.
SSRS Report Conversion
Recreate Crystal Reports as functionally equivalent SSRS reports, ensuring consistency across:
Data logic, joins, and calculations
Record groupings, summaries, and totals
Filters, prompts, and parameter behavior
Layout, formatting, and template structures (as feasible within SSRS capabilities)
Export formats such as PDF, Excel, and other required outputs
Deliver reports without redesigning or altering business rules unless explicitly requested through project direction.
Validation & Quality Assurance
Perform detailed side‑by‑side comparisons of Crystal and SSRS outputs to confirm full functional equivalence.
Validate record counts, totals, financial or fee‑related calculations, grouping structures, and compliance‑related outputs.
Document and resolve discrepancies, ensuring all reports meet acceptance criteria before final delivery.
Deployment & Documentation
Prepare clear technical documentation to support long‑term maintenance of SSRS reports by internal staff.
Conduct knowledge‑transfer sessions or walkthroughs as needed for technical and non‑technical team members.
Coordinate with IT staff to deploy completed SSRS reports into the designated reporting environment.
Requirements
Required
Proven experience converting Crystal Reports to SSRS in enterprise, public sector, or complex multi‑system environments.
Strong SQL skills, including query optimization, stored procedures, joins, and parameterized datasets.
Hands‑on experience developing paginated reports in Microsoft SSRS.
Ability to interpret and accurately re‑create complex reporting logic.
High attention to detail with experience in data validation, regression testing, and quality assurance.
Preferred
Experience with permitting, licensing, regulatory, financial, or compliance‑driven reporting environments.
Familiarity with municipal, state, or governmental reporting structures (or comparable regulated domains).
Experience working with enterprise permitting and licensing systems or similar operational platforms.
Project Role Expectations
Deliver complete and accurate report conversions, including validation and documentation.
Maintain consistent communication with stakeholders and provide timely status updates.
Uphold security, confidentiality, and compliance best practices.
Produce high‑quality work within a structured project governance and quality‑control framework.
