Originally named, Great British Nuclear, Great British Energy - Nuclear is an arm’s length body of the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, dedicated to supporting the development and deployment of new nuclear technologies in Great Britain. We play a crucial role in advancing nuclear new build, ensuring the UK’s energy security and achieving net-zero carbon emissions. Great British Energy - Nuclear focuses on fostering innovation, facilitating investment, and coordinating efforts across the nuclear industry to build a resilient and sustainable energy future.
Great British Energy - Nuclear’s first step was to start the technology selection process for Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) in 2023. SMRs can potentially be quicker to deploy and less expensive to build than traditional nuclear power plants because they are smaller, have factory based modular manufacturing and more flexible deployment options. In June 2025, Great British Energy - Nuclear announced that Rolls-Royce SMR had been selected as the preferred bidder to build the UK’s first SMRs, following a technology selection process that began in 2023.
Great British Energy - Nuclear is aiming to deliver fast, based on a supportive and collaborative culture which values equality and diversity and creates an inclusive workplace. We draw on deep nuclear expertise – our Executive Committee has over 100 years of nuclear experience at home and abroad. GBN-E will unlock billions of pounds of private and public investment from design to operation, helping to get sites ready for development, and working to grow manufacturing capacity and skills capability.
Our activities will be driven by our values, which are:
Trust - We prioritise safety, we act responsibly and with integrity.
Collaboration - We work as a team; we value diversity and expertise.
Challenge - We are curious and courageous in the way we think and act.
Care - We are thoughtful, inclusive and respectful of others.
Drive - We get things done and we make a difference.

Job Profile:
The Data Architect/Engineer will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining the organisation’s data architecture and data models. Your work will support the organisation’s strategic goal to effectively use data for decision making, ensuring the value of data and information can be maximised to support our mission.
Reporting to the Information Management Lead, you will work collaboratively with project teams and other stakeholders to ensure data flows efficiently and securely across digital systems during the design and construction of a complex enterprise.
The role requires expertise in enterprise architecture, data modelling, data architecture, and the integration of engineering and operational data systems, ensuring compliance with ISO 8000 (Data Quality) and ISO 27001 (Information Security Management).
You will form part of the establishment of a major programme. This will provide you with an opportunity to be part of a team that ensures successful delivery of a First of a Kind (FOAK) UK SMR Project, helping to ensure that it minimises its environmental impact whilst delivering cost-effective energy capacity. Whilst this is a fast-paced and exciting challenge, you will need to be comfortable with uncertainty, ambiguity and change.
We are looking for digital and technology professionals who are passionate about unlocking the value of data and technology to support our project to deliver the UK’s net zero ambition. We will consider skilled candidates from diverse professional backgrounds who may be able to challenge our existing delivery requirements or methods. Candidates should not be afraid to bring new ideas about how their skills knowledge and experience may help our mission and support our values.
Responsibilities:
Act as an informed client across the SMR Project and its supply chains to collaboratively:
• Coordinate the design and implementation of enterprise data architectures, domain models, metadata standards, and ontologies that meet the SMR Project’s operational, regulatory, environmental, and safety needs.
• Scope data domains across the enterprise, identifying and prioritising critical information needs across engineering, regulatory, operational, and business functions.
• Plan and design ontology structures that support semantic consistency, data reuse, and traceability across systems and disciplines.
• Coordinate the development and maintenance of data models and architectures for both structured and unstructured data, supporting enterprise-wide integration and analytics.
• Lead the development of the Project Information Model, ensuring it enables structured data exchange, semantic clarity, and traceability across the lifecycle—from design and construction to commissioning and operations.
• Work collaboratively to define and govern the Common Data Environment (CDE) structure and metadata framework, ensuring consistent classification, accessibility, and linkage between engineering content and enterprise data.
• Engage with enterprise architecture (EA) and systems engineering teams to ensure that the data architecture aligns with system integration strategies, product lifecycle management, and digital delivery requirements.
• Align data models and ontologies with data protection and cybersecurity frameworks, ensuring regulatory compliance, data assurance, and alignment with enterprise policies and cloud strategies.
• Develop and deliver draft domain models, working closely with stakeholders to validate assumptions, define relationships, and ensure business value.
• Establish and implement Ontology v1, including traceability mechanisms to support data lineage, provenance, and reuse across multiple systems.
• Classify and catalogue data assets, ensuring they are structured, discoverable, and aligned to business and regulatory requirements.
• Refine domain models and ontologies iteratively based on delivery feedback, lessons learned, and evolving system architecture decisions.
• Validate data and domain models against regulatory data standards and engineering constraints, ensuring traceability and auditability.
• Implement and evolve Ontology v2, enabling alignment with digital twin environments and support for advanced analytics and digital engineering use cases.
• Champion data management best practices based on DAMA-DMBOK frameworks and ISO 8000, establishing consistent standards and behaviours across the project and its supply chain.
• Identify business requirements, advise project and supplier teams, and manage the full data product life cycle to support effective data sharing, reporting, and analytics.
• Collaborate closely with GBN’s IT and cybersecurity teams to ensure the architecture supports configuration management, information security, and the overarching digital strategy for FOAK reactor delivery.
• Support capability development, including the design and delivery of data management training and awareness activities across internal teams and external partners.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience required:
• Proven experience in designing and managing enterprise data architectures, ontologies, and data models in complex engineering or infrastructure environments.
• Proficiency in SQL, Python, or equivalent programming/data query languages.
• Strong understanding of ontology planning, domain modelling, metadata structures, and knowledge management frameworks.
• Familiarity with relevant standards, including ISO 8000, ISO 27001, ISO 19650, and DAMA-DMBOK principles.
• Demonstrated ability to work across cross-disciplinary teams, capturing business requirements and aligning technical solutions with enterprise-level strategy.
• Excellent problem-solving and critical thinking skills, with the ability to make informed decisions under pressure.
• Outstanding communication skills, with the ability to engage both technical and non-technical stakeholders effectively.
• A collaborative mindset and the ability to build capability in others, while working independently at pace in a multi-party environment.
• TOGAF knowledge or certification and an understanding of enterprise architecture frameworks, including their application in large-scale systems integration.
• Experience working with Bentley ProjectWise as a Common Data Environment (CDE), with a focus on data integration, metadata modelling, and information traceability across structured and unstructured engineering datasets
• Experience using the Arcadia methodology and the Capella modelling tool for systems engineering and architecture design is strongly preferred.
• Familiarity with SysML is highly desirable, particularly for integration with systems architecture and digital engineering workflows.
Nice to have skills and experience:
• Knowledge of nuclear industry standards, regulations, and information management practices, including IAEA, ONR, and NRC guidance.
• Experience with AI and machine learning use cases in engineering or operational contexts.
• Familiarity with configuration management processes and standards (e.g. ISO 10007).
• Experience in complex major projects, ideally within highly regulated or safety-critical sectors.
• Understanding of ISO 14001 and integration of environmental data in enterprise models.
Qualifications:
• Degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, or a related technical field (or equivalent professional experience).
• Certifications in Cloud Architecture, Data Engineering, Ontology Development, or Cybersecurity are desirable.
