Job Overview

Data is a key component to the monitoring and success of the the National Institute of Health and Care Research (NIHR) Manchester Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) hosted by Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT). Data keeps our stakeholders informed about progress and activity.

As part of the Data Team, the post-holder will be responsible for supporting the Information and Data Manager with the production, development and promotion of a range of information and analysis services to meet the reporting requirements of the BRC.

Main duties of the job

   • Implement data collection mechanisms to provide metrics for reporting

   • Audit and validate data stored within systems to check quality and identify errors or missing information

   • Provide routine and ad hoc information on request

   • Undertake data analysis and produce accurate and user-friendly reports

   • Coordinate the preparation of data submissions to NIHR / DHSC as part of regular annual reports

Qualifications

Essential criteria

   • Degree in a science, data or health related discipline or relevant experience of scientific and medical research and health data gained in an NHS research setting

Desirable criteria

   • Post graduate certificate in clinical research or other relevant health data post graduate qualification.

Knowledge

Essential criteria

   • Knowledge of the use of NHS research and/or IT management systems.

   • Experience in multiple computer software packages including Microsoft Office in particular advanced use of spreadsheets.

   • Knowledge of database management including query and report design.

Desirable criteria

   • Knowledge of NHS research funding, application, approval and governance.

Training and Experience

Essential criteria

   • Experience in the set up, testing and validation of information systems.

   • Experience of querying databases using SQL or other methods.

   • Experience of super user level management of information systems and user support.

   • Experience communicating data collection requirements to non-technical staff to support the creation of data management plans at project levels.

Desirable criteria

   • Familiar with the format of NIHR and other NHS report datasets.

   • Experience of working with networks and external organisations, e.g. universities

   • Experience of data visualisation using Power BI or similar tools.

Skills And Abilities

Essential criteria

   • Advanced IT skills including MS Word, Excel, SQL-Server, Access and other database packages, PowerPoint, Publisher, Internet and email

   • Ability to compile, interrogate and perform complex analysis of data to produce meaningful and accessible management reports tailored to the requirements of the intended audience.

   • Ability to identify and analyse information management problems and to offer relevant solutions

   • Experience of working to tight deadlines and ability to prioritise competing demands under pressure to achieve targets

   • Attention to detail

   • Ability to use own initiative.

Desirable criteria

   • Experience of line management of staff; workload allocation, performing appraisals and providing objective based development of staff; dealing with staff performance and disciplinary issues.

   • Ability to create and edit visual basic macros in Excel and Access

   • Able to meaningfully present data to audiences from a range of backgrounds.
