Role description
Data Engineer (Contract) – Edinburgh Hybrid (2–3 days onsite)
£500/day (Inside IR35) | 6-month initial engagement
Overview
We’re seeking a Senior Data Engineer to join a high-performing data team responsible for delivering robust, scalable and well-governed data pipelines that power reporting, analytics and downstream data products across the business.
This role has a strong hands-on engineering focus, combined with technical leadership across more complex delivery work. You’ll help shape how trusted data moves from source systems into modern cloud-based platforms, ensuring it is reliable, secure, well-documented and AI-ready.
You’ll work closely with Data Owners, Analysts, Architects and Platform Engineers to translate requirements into well-engineered solutions and promote consistent engineering standards across the wider team.
Key Responsibilities
You will:
• Design, build, test, deploy and maintain scalable data pipelines and data products from source systems through to analytics and reporting layers
• Provide technical leadership across complex or cross-functional delivery work
• Own and support key data pipelines, including incident resolution, root cause analysis and controlled releases
• Deliver solutions aligned to agreed CI/CD practices, engineering standards and architectural principles
• Implement and maintain data quality checks, monitoring, alerting and automation
• Ensure data pipelines meet requirements for security, lineage, documentation, naming conventions and governance standards
• Translate business and analytical requirements into robust technical designs
• Collaborate with stakeholders across Data, Analytics, Governance and Engineering functions
• Contribute to continuous improvement, reusable patterns and engineering best practice adoption
• Provide mentoring and guidance to other engineers where required
Core Technology Stack (Must Have Front and Centre)
• Snowflake – primary cloud data platform for warehousing and analytics
• Microsoft Azure – cloud infrastructure and data services
• dbt (Data Build Tool) – transformation layer and analytics engineering
• Microsoft Fabric – pipeline orchestration and integrated data platform services
Desirable Skills
• Alteryx – beneficial for workflow automation and data blending use cases
• Oracle Database – advantageous for legacy or enterprise source system integration
What We’re Looking For
• Strong experience in data engineering within modern cloud environments
• Proven delivery of scalable, production-grade data pipelines
• Strong understanding of CI/CD, DevOps principles and automated testing in data environments
• Experience working with complex source systems and transforming data into analytics-ready structures
• Confident working with stakeholders to define and deliver data requirements
• Strong focus on data quality, governance, observability and operational excellence
Working Arrangements
• Edinburgh-based hybrid working (2–3 days per week onsite)
• 6-month initial contract
• £500 per day (Inside IR35)
Why Apply?
This is a great opportunity to work on modern data platforms using leading cloud technologies, shaping scalable data solutions that directly enable analytics, insight and business decision-making in a highly collaborative engineering environment.
