Role description
About The Role FDM is a global business and technology consultancy seeking a Data Engineers to work for our global Security & Defence client. This is initially a 3-month contract with potential to extend and is a fully remote role. Our client operates a hub-and-spoke data and analytics model. The corporate functions ‘spoke’ operates as a central hub, collaborating with divisional data spokes, the Digital Solutions function, and the Data Office to define data architecture, governance, and platform strategy. Spokes deliver data products, analytics, and reporting aligned to local priorities. This role sits within corporate functions spoke team, working closely with business stakeholders to build data products, pipelines, and models that unlock value from enterprise and operational data. The data environment is a mix of current Azure-based technology and a future open data platform, with ongoing migration and capability uplift. Responsibilities: Build and maintain data pipelines and data products that feed analytics and reporting solutions. Collaborate with data analysts, scientists, and TechOps engineers to design and deliver high-quality, reusable data products. Support the migration of data products from the current Azure-based stack to the modern open lakehouse stack. Develop playbooks and apply engineering best practices in data acquisition, modelling, version control, orchestration, and testing. Deliver and maintain production-grade data pipelines aligned to hub standards. Develop and support reusable data models and products consumed across analytics and BI use cases. Apply software engineering best practices in the data context (testing, version control, CI/CD). Collaborate effectively within Agile, product-oriented data teams. Support the transition from legacy Azure data flows to the modern open-source data stack. About You Strong SQL development skills (Azure SQL or PostgreSQL). Proficiency in Python for data transformation and orchestration. Experience designing and building ETL/ELT pipelines (ADF or equivalent). Understanding of data lake concepts and storage patterns (Blob, S3, or similar). Supporting Power BI datasets and semantic models. Familiarity with Git-based development, version control, and collaborative workflows. Understanding of data modelling (dimensional/star schema). Desirable Experience Spark for distributed data processing. Knowledge of modern data lakehouse technologies (Iceberg, Delta, Hudi). Experience with Dagster, Airflow, or equivalent orchestration frameworks. Experience with Trino or Presto as query engines. Knowledge of CI/CD pipelines, data testing, and observability tools. Understanding of data contracts, data mesh, and data product concepts. Awareness of secure data exchange and compliance requirements (in defence and aerospace contexts).
