Role description

This posting is for a contract assignment and is not a full-time employment offer with Boeing. Candidates selected for roles will be employed as contract workers through a Boeing approved 3rd party for the duration of the specified project.

Boeing Defense, Space and Security (BDS) is seeking an Advanced Information Technologist – Data Ontologist to join our growing Data Analytics Engineering & Integration team in Ridley Park, PA, Seattle, WA, or Hazelwood, MO! This team is tasked with transforming the way BDS data is sourced, managed, and utilized to unlock insights to drive business growth and optimization. The team supports data needs for internal stakeholders, across BDS business programs and functions, and is tasked with utilizing data to inform and improve the full lifecycle of BDS products.

As an Advanced Information Technologist – Data Ontologist/Modeler, you will drive semantic modeling, ontology development, and enterprise data model strategy across the aerospace, manufacturing, and supply chain landscape. This role is central to our knowledge and data modernization efforts, shaping the architecture of interoperable, reusable, and business-aligned data products in a federated Data Mesh environment. You will work at the intersection of technology and aerospace innovation, leading efforts to harness data for optimizing processes, enhancing performance, and facilitating growth.

This role requires a resourceful, self-driven, outcome-oriented individual with meticulous attention to detail and the ability to partner, execute, and communicate skillfully, while solving complex problems in dynamic environments. The ideal candidate will have experience with large scale data platforms, cloud computing, hybrid clouds, software development, and requirements management.

Position Responsibilities

Design, develop, and maintain semantic models and ontologies that represent manufacturing, supply chain, and quality concepts—including parts, processes, logistics, configurations, materials, and nonconformance tracking.

Create and evolve domain-driven data models that align with enterprise architecture and support cross-domain Data Mesh adoption.

Evaluate and design conceptual, logical, and physical data models in collaboration with engineers, quality experts, and data product owners.

Collaborate with domain teams to ensure consistent application of models and semantic alignment across the enterprise.

Lead efforts to establish modeling standards, best practices, and reusable patterns that ensure consistency, accuracy, and scalability.

Ensure all models are aligned with data governance and management policies, enabling compliance and quality-driven decision-making.

Analyze business and data product requirements to support data mesh enablement, system modernization, and semantic interoperability across legacy and modern platforms.

Work with broader architecture and platform teams to ensure models integrate seamlessly across PLM and ERP systems.

Translate complex domain and data relationships into clear documentation, visual models, and presentations for technical and business stakeholders.

Guide domain and product owners on how the ontology and models support their needs, ensuring adoption and long-term sustainability.

Promote the development of shared frameworks, semantic accelerators, and reusable components to reduce duplication and encourage enterprise-wide reuse.

This position is remote. This means that the selected candidate might be required to perform 1 day per week onsite at one of the listed location options. This is at the hiring team’s discretion and could potentially change in the future.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience)

3+ years of experience in data modeling.

1+ years of experience in ontology development, enterprise data modeling, or semantic architecture, preferably in aerospace, manufacturing, or supply chain environments.

1+ years of experience in AWS cloud technologies.

Familiarity with ER/Studio for data modeling, including its features for diagramming, model management, and metadata management.

Proficient in identifying and evaluating options to determine the best solutions that meet business requirements.

Skilled at transforming intricate data issues into conceptual, logical, and physical models.

Capable of driving immediate actions that align with long-term objectives.

Strong in managing stakeholder relationships, understanding their needs, and influencing decisions with clear communication at various levels.

Exceptional at teamwork, facilitation, and negotiation, demonstrating strong interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience)

Experience with AWS GovCloud.

1+ years of Agile and/or SAFe Agile.

3+ years of experience in ontology development, enterprise data modeling, or semantic architecture, preferably in aerospace, manufacturing, or supply chain environments.

Proficiency with ontology languages (OWL, RDF, SHACL), modeling tools (ER/Studio), and semantic standards.

Familiarity with graph databases (e.g., Neo4j, GraphDB) and data integration patterns across traditional and modern platforms.

Programming/scripting ability (e.g., Python, SQL) is a plus.
